John Elder, Headmaster of Cargilfield since 2004, is one of the most experienced Heads in the private sector. A teacher at heart, the children of Cargilfield come first in every way.

I have been a Headmaster since 1985 and came to Cargilfield in 2004. Before that I was Headmaster of Beeston Hall in Norfolk for 13 years and Malsis in Yorkshire for 6 years. Cargilfield is all about children and providing an environment of challenge and enjoyment but most importantly happiness for it is through this happiness that children will succeed. Whether it be preparing a pupil for Eton and Oundle in the South or Fettes and Glenalmond in the North; whether it be teaching a pupil Classics or Mathematics; whether it be teaching children how to fence or how to make films, Cargilfield is about the development of the whole person, trying to instil a desire for truth and a respect for others in a caring and happy atmosphere.
The fact that Cargilfield pupils have won over 50 awards to senior schools all over the United Kingdom in the past 5 years, have been national UK hockey champions in 2008, have won British fencing awards and a host of other achievements is the icing on the cake in a school which produces an open and trusting ethos in which each pupil is able to feel that they can approach any member of the community, whether they be staff or pupil; in a school which provides a range of activities, hobbies and pastimes that will assist in the personal, social and cultural development of each pupil; in a school which safeguards and promotes the welfare of each pupil and in a school which develops pupils’ qualities of leadership, of being able to work as part of a team and most importantly which develops each pupil’s confidence. Thank you for visiting our website and I hope that it will answer many of your questions but it is more important for you to come and visit Cargilfield to witness for yourself the excitement of our education and the happiness of the children.
