Art

Art at Cargilfield is taught by a specialist Art teacher from P3 upwards. Art and Design activities promote discovery and understanding of feelings as well as providing a means of expressing these visually. The Art department is a place where pupils can create with confidence and ambition as they react imaginatively to the world around them. Several Art scholarships have been won in the past 3 years: to Oundle, Glenalmond, Merchiston and Loretto.

The Art Department is Fine Art based and is run by Mark Rees (Head of Art).   Art is taught in the upper school (years 3 – 8) and includes drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics and 3D construction.  The Department also fosters healthy links with the film and video club and some set design.  There is an abundance of art clubs during the morning breaks and in the evening sessions which include: ceramics (cartoon clay), specialist print, batik and scholarship art!  Art history, both historical and contemporary are regarded as very relevant; regular trips to galleries in Edinburgh are encouraged to give children ‘first hand’ experience of art happening outside of the school. Through our Artist In Residence programme we have we have fostered links with Edinburgh College of Art and encourage a variety of disciplines and skills to pass on to the children.  Although art is taken very seriously at Cargilfield it is also seen as fun and a means of personal expression which we believe is very important to a child’s development.

In addition to painting, drawing, print-making, film making, textiles and photography, Design offers a tremendous mix of imagination and practicality. The emphasis is firmly on project work and problem solving and with 3 ICT suites, Cargilfield children are very well supported in their quest for innovation.
