Drama

Drama has moved on in the past decade from when there was only one production during the year, and only a handful of boys and girls managed to get a part. Drama at Cargilfield is for everybody; a junior drama group works each Tuesday evening throughout the year and produces a play at the end of each term; a senior drama group works during the autumn term; the Divisions compete for the drama prize during two of the terms, with each Division putting on its own play; there is a major play production at the end of March, which will often involve as many as sixty children; years 6 and 7 put on a short Shakespeare play during June; P3 perform a play at half term in the summer term; and then we have all the Christmas plays for the wee ones in the Pre-Prep.

Teamwork is by far the most important factor in all of our drama; children learn to be part of a team, whether on stage, back stage, or part of the lighting or sound crews, and there is even an opportunity for children to run the make-up department as well. Drama is tremendous fun and during the preparation for a play, during the individual productions, boys and girls gain confidence by being on stage; they learn to enunciate words and songs; they play off each other - they help each other when one or another makes an error; they enjoy teaching each other particularly in rehearsals during the spring term.

Susan Sommerville and Isobel Chappell are in charge of the drama department at Cargilfield; but they are not on their own and they receive help from many of the teachers and also some of our mums and dads. Ian Sommerville runs our lighting and sound department and is also in charge of our film-making club which produces two or three DVDs each year.

At any one time, there will be fifty children taking part in drama and film-making.We do believe that it is important to give the child his or her head to come up with ideas, to help to run the show.
