Learning Support

Support for Learning

Cargilfield aims to enable every pupil in our care to achieve his or her true potential. Some of our pupils have different pathways to learning. We aim to recognise these different pathways and support in such a way that every pupil has the opportunity to learn and to build on previous learning at an individual level.

Within our rich environment, Cargilfield will identify a pupil’s strength as well as weakness and work on both accordingly.

The Support for Learning department will work closely with parents, teachers and pupils to assist in this process.

Identification of Needs in Early Years

Working with teachers and parents, our department will endeavour to identify needs from an early age. Strategies will be put in place to support reading readiness and the early stages of the reading process. Specific handwriting programmes are also commonly used to support organisation in the writing process.

The Upper School

Pupils may be identified at any stage. Those with additional support needs will be encouraged to talk about their learning differences and to work together on a way forward. Pupils might work with support in class, in small groups out of class or individually out of class.

One-to-one Learning SupportOne-to-one Learning Support

Pupils will be encouraged to think about and practise strategies that work for each individual learning style. These strategies will include study skills and organisational skills. Laptops or similar technology is encouraged to support learning.

Extra time and appropriate support is arranged for those pupils who require it at the time of examinations.

All teachers are aware of the additional support needs of all pupils.

We welcome the support of outside agencies to ensure appropriate strategies are in place for all our pupils.
