8L visit to the City Art Gallery

Members of 8L were treated to a firsthand experience of the sculptor David Mach, who is currently exhibiting at the City Art Centre.  There is an assortment of photo collages and 3D sculptures using coat hangers and matchsticks, and a collection of photographs forming artwork which Mach has linked to stories from the King James’ Bible.  The techniques used in his exhibition have inspired the children to create similar works, but without the added danger of using matchsticks, which Mach lights to form giant fireballs, which he sees as change rather than destruction.  The children have suggested that they use cotton buds instead for Health & Safety reasons!  Now inspired the children are covering sculptures in cork, paperclips, coloured drawing pins and glitter.  On our way back to school we stopped off at the Gallery of Modern Art and viewed the equally impressive sculpture show by Tony Cragg in the grounds there. A fun, informative time was had by all!
