There's never a dull moment at Cargilfield. Check on this page for all of our news. It’s updated weekly and will give you a good sense of the goings-on at school.

As an introduction to their Food and Farming Topic, the P3 classes visited West Craigies Farm. They were met by employees of Vion who are sponsoring School Farm visits. Lots of photos were taken which may appear in the press over the next two weeks. It was to celebrate Scottish Food Fortnight.
We were shown the free range hens, Mango and Chutney (the huge pot-bellied pigs) and ten nameless Saddleback piglets which are being bred for pork, bacon and ham. We then visited the crop fields where we pulled up carrots, parsnips, turnip, beetroot and picked broad beans and peas. There were huge pumpkins growing in the field that will be ripe for Hallowe’en! After a delicious pancake with home grown/made raspberry jam, one class went on the trailer to see wheat and barley growing and harvested and the other class walked around the rubbing trail and read the signs. Farmer Sinclair is very sympathetic to nature by having wildlife tunnels (hedges) and leaving grass squares in crops for skylarks to nest. He also uses as little pesticide and fertilizer as possible. The children guessed the clues for the rubbings and completed the sheets. We were also able to see the latest development at West Craigies – a cherry orchard!
This gave the P3s a great insight to a variety of crops and showed the diversity that is present on an arable farm. The wind did not hold us back!
