Sport

Currently, Physical Education is offered to all pupils from nursery to Form 4. All children get one 45 minute lesson of PE, either in the Games Hall, the Pre-Prep Hall or outside, depending on the weather/activity.

The nursery class attends PE once a week in one of 2 groups (3/4 year olds and 4/5 year olds). They are introduced to a wide variety of experiences aimed to improve their physical skills in a safe and most importantly, fun environment.

Throughout P1, the PE course focuses on 3 main activities: ball skills, gymnastics and dance. The aim of these activities is to develop each child’s basic movement and co-ordination skills at an elementary level and to introduce new patterns of skilled movements. Throughout P2 the PE course focuses on 4 main activities: ball skills, gymnastics, dance and team games. The aim of each activity at this stage is to develop and improve hand-eye co-ordination, balance and awareness in a series of different movement and isolation skills, both co-operatively and competitively. By P3, each child participates in ball skills, gymnastics, dance, fitness, and team games. Emphasis is placed on co-operation, competitive and creative response and development of their knowledge and understanding of activities and exercise.

All children from P2 upwards receive swimming lessons at a local swimming pool.

Games Programme

The Games Programme at Cargilfield offers pupils from P3 upwards the opportunity to specialise and develop in selected sports over the school year. Pupils attend Games every day for an hour and all levels are catered for. Regular Wednesday and Saturday fixtures are an important part of the programme, and the children have the opportunity to represent teams at U9, U10, U11, U12 and U13 levels. Many of our pupils go on to represent the ‘Dandylions’ team (District Prep Schools) in many sports and indeed the Scotland Prep Schools team. On offer during games are activities such as rugby, netball, hockey, soccer, cross country, cricket, tennis, rounders, and athletics.

There are numerous other activities, sporting and non-sporting, run throughout the year both during Games and after school, including ski-ing, climbing, judo, archery, fencing and swimming. We aim to interest and challenge all children and encourage them to have a good sense of fair play and sportsmanship from an early age, no matter what the activity.
