leftColBody | In what was glorious sunshine to start with, disrupted by some heavy rain and at one point hail, our first Saturday fixture of the term was successful. We batted confidently in the middle order with Edo and Ramsay making a number of boundaries after Alexander and Leo fell early on. Edo was unlucky to be dismissed on 25 but Ramsay batted assuredly to his half century before being retired. Other notable performances with the bat came from Ollie (20 from 21 balls) and Adley (16 from 12) both of whom were retired to make sure everyone got some time at the crease. We posted a terrific total of 168 but Merchiston's bowling was good given they gave away just the 31 extras in 20 overs. The decision to have match tea in the sunshine was a poor one in hindsight as when we returned to begin fielding, the clouds gathered and just as we began to make some momentum by dismissing two of their players early on, the heavens opened and we made a dash for shelter in the trees. When we came back on, the rain had got lighter but there was a very wet ball out there and a few boys without spikes, slipping around. As the ball became difficult to control in the conditions, we took another rain delay only to find once we had all got inside, the rain had stopped and we could go back out just when we thought it would be an abandoned match. |
rightColBody | Thank goodness we were able to finish the match as although Merchiston were not going to reach our total, they were doggedly determined to stay at the crease and played some very good blocks. In came Ramsay for his one over of the game and his devastating bowling of 3 wickets in 6 balls took the game by the scruff of the neck and when Edward took their 10th wicket by LBW, it was all over. We won the match by 87 runs but there will be a stiffer test on Wednesday when we have the second of 3 fixtures against Merchiston and this time, they will have a stronger squad as many were off playing rugby at the weekend. Man of the match had to be Ramsay for his terrific 50* and his 3 wickets for 3 runs. |

leftColBody | On Friday 26th April 30 children in Forms 6,7 and 8 attended the annual Prep School’s Orchestral Day hosted by FettesCollege. We were made very welcome as always and challenged with some interesting repertoire. Mr Pettingerworked with the different groups within the orchestra to really bring out the contrasting sonorities within the pieces and I think everyone who attended the concert at the end of the day was impressed with how much had been achieved in a very short space of time. Well done to everyone involved! Click here for more photographs. |

Molly lost her real cat on a ferry crossing and the book follows what she thinks happened to Oscar. The children were engaged and asked really interesting questions about all the different characters that Oscar meets in the story, from Robert the Rat to Colin the Captain. What an interesting afternoon we all had! |

leftColBody | Form 4 arrived at Rock UK with great excitement and anticipation. They quickly made their beds and headed off to the swimming pool where lots of fun and games were had, including piggy in the middle and being pushed in! With dinner and a story in the evening they settled for the night. On Saturday we split into groups and took part in; open water canoeing, where the brave jumped into the freezing lake, climbing, low ropes, a zip wire and team building activities. All the staff were very proud of how the children supported each other and challenged themselves to face their fears. Sunday involved a beautiful hike in the hills where the children found a range of creatures, learnt about old settlements on the land and bonded with their friends. Everyone had a wonderful time and came back to school thriving from the experience. |

Despite losing Glen early in the first over Rory and Oli consolidated the innings, rotating the strike and building a solid partnership. This platform allowed for some powerful hitting from Seb and Cody, setting Merchiston 110 to win. Glen took the new ball and gained revenge with his first ball, from then on Cargilfield were in control through a combination of accurate bowling and great fielding. The score before the rain interrupted was 54-6 off 18 overs and a great start to the season continues for the U11’s! |

Lots of learning and exploring, studying the River Esk and coastal erosion at Montrose. Many thanks to all at The Burn for looking after us so well. We look forward to returning in ten days’ time with another group! Click here for more photographs. |

leftColBody | Wednesday’s opening fixture of the term did not tell us an awful lot if we are being honest, and so it was lovely to welcome our old sporting friends and rivals, Merchiston, on Saturday for our first home game of the season. Despite it being early on in the term, this would be much more of a test and give us an idea of the true strength of the side. On what was a warm sunny start to the afternoon, Harry won the toss and chose to bat in what should have been a 30 over game. Having used the new all weather nets since the start of term, playing on a grass wicket for the first time proved a testing proposition for the batsmen of both teams; slow, low and with the odd ball misbehaving and rising sharply off a length or not bouncing at all, batting was not easy but players who got their head down, grafted and played each ball on its merit were rewarded. |
rightColBody | What happened next was extraordinary: after six highly eventful overs Merchiston were 11-8 then all out for 24 at the start of the 10th over, the match was done and dusted and we had won by 82 runs. Quite extraordinary. |

leftColBody | The nursery children have decided to support the Edinburgh Children's Hospital Charity this term through their 'Oor Wullie' trail. As part of this exciting initiative we had an 'oor wullie' sculpture delivered to nursery this week. We have started to prepare the sculpture by sanding it down in preparation for painting, which begins next week! The children are so excited about taking part in the 'Oor Wullie' trail' and can't wait to start decorating him. If you'd like to find out some more information about the project go to www.oorwullie.com and take a look! |

leftColBody | A group of 20 excited children along with Mrs MacKenzie, Mr Murdoch and Cuan set off for Les Menuires during the first week of the Easter holidays for a week’s skiing. We were blessed with hot sunshine every day and fantastic ski conditions. The children had their lessons both in the morning and afternoon and had a hot lunch in between in the hotel which was on the slopes. Evenings were filled with swimming, bum boarding, the in-resort roller coaster, quizzes, crepes and much more and both the children and staff all seemed to have a great week. The next trip is already full so here’s hoping it is as much fun as this year’s trip. Click here for more photographs. |

introText | A strong start to the season |

imageAlt | Cricket |
leftColBody | Cargilfield 128-2 (20 overs) H Armstrong 50no Craigclowan 37 all out After such a warm Easter weekend, typically the weather turned as soon as term started and our first game of the season saw temperatures plunge and we had to cope with numb fingers, cold feet and an icy cold wind coming in from the shores of Loch Leven as we played Craigclowan at Kinross CC just one day in to term. With 22 indoor sessions behind us since the start of the year, we were full of confidence however, and competition for places is strong, which should push everyone to perform at their best with a number of the boys desperate to force their way in to the side over the next week or two. Now that I have started to defrost, I have reflected on a very positive first outing and we can take a lot from the game despite the comprehensive and rather one sided result. In a twenty over game, we batted first and Harry and Edward opened the innings and batted very well, with Edward growing in confidence and Harry pushing the ball in to the gaps and punishing anything short and wide. He reached 50 in ten overs and then retired but it was a fine early season knock which bodes well. Harry Dodds timed the ball well before smashing it in the air to backward point where he was well caught but Freddie and Todd showed great maturity in the final 8 overs, running hard and pushing us up to an excellent score for the loss of just two wickets. The game was already won with an imposing 128 for 2. |
rightColBody | In reply, VJ and William bowled superbly in their three over spells; they hit very good areas, were very hard to score off and would have troubled the very best batsmen on the circuit. It showed just how hard they have worked over the winter months, but they are going to be a very potent duo as the season progresses. Max and Jack got rid of some nerves and showed great potential stepping up from the under 11s, as did Edward and also Freddie bowling at the death; few extras were conceded and the fielding was pretty good considering the horribly cold conditions. Nearly everyone got involved though and there will be opportunities for those who didn’t on Saturday when we face Merchiston at home. They were 37 all out in the final over. One final mention: Todd was superb behind the stumps; he took three catches and was vocal in his encouragement of the fielders. A terrific performance to keep everyone on their toes. So a convincing and one sided win to get us up and running. Sterner challenges lie ahead but we have the potential to be a very useful side indeed and I am looking forward to the next few matches as well as hoping for some warmer weather! Well played, boys. Lots to be pleased with. Right, I think my fingers have defrosted, at last! |

leftColBody | Cargilfield: 227 Craigclowan: 176 Won by 51 runs. On a rather blustery and cold afternoon, the boys were excited to play their first match of the season. It was quite an unusual game as we played on the astro using the pitch dimensions as the boundary; making it a rectangular pitch. The aim of this was to encourage the boys to play more forward drives rather than pull shots as the smaller boundaries were in front and behind the batsman. I was very pleased with Cargilfield’s batting. We were good at placing our shots and hitting the shorter boundaries and running between the wickets. Our bowling was equally good and I was pleased with the amount of wickets we picked up. However, our fielding was disappointing on occasion. Too many boundaries were lost due to the long barrier not being performed. However, as this was the first game of the season I am not too worried and I am sure that there is just a bit of rustiness to be shaken off. Well done, boys! |

leftColBody | The U11A girls had a great start to their rounders season with a win against Craigclowan and Ardvreck! They started fielding in their match against Craigclowan and although they had a slow start, working out good strategies and positions in the field, their batting made up for it. In the second innings they managed to play excellently in the field too, managing to get out all of their batters. A great batting session resulted in a score of 13-8. We played only a single innings against Ardvreck and with more confidence in the field managed to get all the batters out once again! Some excellent catches and good communication. We also saw some excellent hits in the batting with lots of whole rounders. The final score was 9-4. An extra mention goes to Clemmie (Captain) for setting a great example in both fielding and batting and Josephine (Player of the match) for incredible fielding, including catching someone out, in her first rounders match. |

imageAlt | Rounders |
leftColBody | Lost: 2.5 – 4 Despite a windy day the girls enjoyed a good game of rounders against Craiglowan. They started by batting after winning the toss. They played safe by observing the ball while running and none of them got out of the game. However, this technique prevented them from scoring a lot and only Lucy managed to get 2 rounders. The extra half-rounder was due to no balls. During the fielding, they did well in terms of communication but missed many direct catches that could have taken a lot more players out (they did get 5 Craiglowan players out). They will need to work on their catching to stop their opponents from scoring in the future. During the game, Charlotte bowled very efficiently, with Calia being backstop. Clemmie, Francesca and Malayka were on the posts and Evie, Emma, Lottie, Lucie and Sabine were deep field. Well done, girls. |

perch_imageAlt | Rounders |
perch_leftColBody | Lost: 2.5 – 4 Despite a windy day the girls enjoyed a good game of rounders against Craiglowan. Well done, girls. |

leftColBody | Lost: 2 – 4.5 Despite a windy day the girls have been all smiles playing rounders again. The girls played one inning starting by batting. They have been good at watching where the ball is while running to avoid getting out. However, by playing so carefully they did not score a lot of rounders and it played against them in the final score. Saphira did well as she managed to get a full rounder. When fielding, the girls had a good communication between themselves but (maybe due to cold fingers) they missed a few catches which their opponents used at their advantage. Hannah was bowling and made a good pair with Caitlin. Rose, Amy, Flora, Clara and Katinka rotated on the posts. Laura, Bethany and Saphira managed the field. All in all a good game; well done, girls. |

leftColBody | 1st Girls Rounders v Ardvreck and Craigclowan In Baltic conditions for our first matches of the term we faced Craigclowan and Ardvreck. Our first match was against Ardvreck. We won the toss and elected to field first. Ardvreck were a little tentative to start with as it was the first game of the season. However, their third batter hit into the deep although great fielding by Issy kept her at 2nd post. She was Ardvrecks’s star player and also scored another 2 rounders on her next 2 balls. Our fielding was tight and as we became more confident some super fielding by Ellie on second base and a catch out by Emma off ball 15 kept their score down. When it was our turn to bat Sophie took a half rounder off the first ball, followed by a rounder form Emma off ball 10. As we got into out stride Amelia, Issy, Flora, Rosanna and Catherine also scored. Final score Ardvreck 3 1/2, Cargilfield 8 ½ We batted first against Craigclowan with Sophie again starting strongly. Her left handed bat deep intot he field took our opposition a bit by surprise. Amelia and Issy were also on form and Katie also scored a half rounder. However, this is an area we will need to work on as it was certainly the weaker area of our play today. Our fielding was tight but Craigclowan were focused and strong. What we did manage to do was to keep our fielding effective round 2nd past and limit their scoring. However, we have work to do to develop our triangle between bowler, first and backstop. Final score Cargilfield 7, Craigclowan 4 |

leftColBody | Win 8 ½ to 7 It was a blustery afternoon up in Perth but the girls played well in their first match of the season. They lost the toss and had to bat first but there were some good balls hit and many half rounders scored, notably from Ruby and Lottie. Quite a few no balls yielded half rounders too!! Craigclowan then went in to bat and the girls manages to filed well and stop any full rounders with Matilda putting in a solid bowling performance and Cicely solid at backstop. In the second innings, some stronger hits gave more half rounders with Fran and Isabella scoring. The second innings fielding saw some great defensive work from Sophia and strong and accurate bowling from Iona. Judith finished off with a magnificent catch out of one of their strongest players. Overall, a successful and very enjoyable afternoon. |

leftColBody | Won by 127 runs. Following what was a very warm Easter weekend, it was back to the usual chilly spring cricket season in Perth this afternoon. Our 2nd XI captain for this season, William, lost the toss but we were put in to bat which was what he would have chosen if he won! William alongside his vice-captain, Edward opened the batting and began by defending some good deliveries. Unfortunately, Edward fell early to a straight ball before managing to get off the mark but William carried on scoring 7 from 33 before he was retired to allow another batsman in. Fergus had also gone cheaply, trying to pull a shot that went on to clip the off-stump but Edo added a bit of dynamism to the crease with some well-placed shots as well as getting a few extra bye runs from their wide deliveries. When William was retired, Ned came in and quickly asserted himself. His strength proved useful as he began smacking the ball around and reached 43 from 33 balls. Unfortunately, I told him he required 7 more runs to get his half-century and sure enough the next ball was straight and Ned missed it when he attempted to whack it and that was him out. A terrific innings nonetheless. Lachie batted very well and was retired on 16 as we looked to make sure everyone got a bat. Ramsay also batted sensibly till the end, making 11. Our final total was 161 which is the highest I can remember a Cargilfield 2nd XI making but we were assisted by the 64 extras although we ran quite a few wides which made this seem worse than it was. |
rightColBody | After a delicious tea from our hosts, we were back out in the cold to field. Following a slow start, we made the breakthrough thanks to William’s two wickets in succession; he was unable to get his hat trick though but he started the ball rolling. We rotated the bowling around to ensure everyone got at least one over and that kept everyone involved in the nippy weather. Tom and Joshua were our most economical bowlers with Josh taking 2 wickets. Fergus also took a couple, including the final wicket required to bowl them out for 38, and Edward, Edo and Maclean got one each. Lachie kept behind the stumps incredibly well, taking a catch from William’s first wicket but the moment of the day was Maclean’s superb catch at close range for William’s third – his reaction to the ball passing his left shoulder was outstanding! Overall it was a terrific start to the season. Well done to all but especially Ned for his knock and William who led the team well and was our highest wicket taker. Maclean gets special mention for his bravery in the field. There are many boys desperate to play cricket and there will be lots of squad rotation in the 2nd XI this season. Our next game on Saturday against Merchiston has a different line-up and will see those Form 7s who have been working hard in the nets over the winter and spring come in. Competition for places is definitely there and will keep everyone on their toes - so everyone needs to keep working hard at training! |

Competition for places is definitely there and will keep everyone on their toes - so everyone needs to keep working hard at training! |

leftColBody | Once again, a group of Cargilfield actors will be collaborating with Eagle House School to put on William Golding’s ‘Lord of the Flies’ at this year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe Edinburgh Fringe 2019 from 5th to 10th August. Eighteen children, one island... an incredible adventure turns into a fight for survival. Aquila Youth Theatre's compelling production of William Golding’s explosive 20th-century classic comes to the Fringe in 2019. Struggling with the conflict between the human impulse towards savagery and the rules of civilisation, the children are swept up in a power struggle and descend into violence that will shatter their innocence. This visceral story is all the more relevant in 21st-century Britain where violent crime is becoming increasingly rooted in our society. Do not miss this powerful, adrenalin-filled production. leftColBody | Un mot ...Un jour... Words are the building blocks of language and apparently mastering 500 of them would give us fluency in any foreign language. Easy you might say, but if you think about it which 500 words are you going to choose to learn? … Well, at Cargilfield we like to introduce children to a new language right from Nursery and this is where they will start their learning journey towards 500 words. At this early stage we start with the basics, we learn how to introduce ourselves, the colours, we learn to count and sing songs. Just listening to a new language will give children an ear for the different tones. I like to call it “La pyramide inversée” For example: P3 deux, soleil, jaune, chaud P2 Soleil, jaune, chaud P1 Soleil, jaune Nursery Jaune By the time the children reach F4 not only are they very comfortable with all classroom instructions and vocabulary, but they also have the basic tools and vocabulary for all the different topics that common entrance covers. Using the classroom vocabulary below, perhaps you would like to try to have a go at the pyramid, and see how many words you already know? Coming back to our 500 words and deciding which ones would be appropriate to learn, I have worked with F4 children on creating a “one word a day perpetual calendar”, they all have independently chosen a word in English and translated it in French. We pushed the activity a little further by creating a French writing template, trying to handwrite like French children, understanding the gender of the word and finally they wrote the word in their own phonetic way, so whoever will read the word can also work out the correct pronunciation!! We are still very far away from 500 words but next term F5 and F6 will follow in the F4 footsteps et ainsi de suite.... |

At the birthplace of sevens, where Ned Haig invented the game, they fought through a number of tough games against semi professional sides before losing to London Scottish in the Final. Jamie was interviewed on the BBC by former Scotland captain Andy Nicol before the final. Our graduate assistant, Will Stephen, was also in the squad and the Accies played some fantastic sevens throughout the day. |
