introTextWhat to do during the long summer holiday?
leftColBody

At this time of year, teachers are often asked by parents what they can do over the long summer holidays to help their child with their learning. There is no simple answer to this important question; it depends very much upon the particular child and where they are on their individual learning journey.

A general piece of advice, however, is that opportunities to practise reading are vital to a child’s academic progress. No matter the age of the child, they should read for pleasure as often as possible, and preferably, daily. Literacy is the cornerstone of the curriculum, and developing the fluency and accuracy of reading improves performance across other subjects. Reading widens a child’s vocabulary, improves their concentration levels, develops their empathy and creativity, and stimulates their imagination. In addition, reading for pleasure can benefit a child’s wellbeing and mental health; this could perhaps be seen as the most valuable benefit of all, given the challenging circumstances children have faced over the past couple of years.

In Mathematics, having a firm grasp of basic numeracy is absolutely essential to a child’s progress. The ability to work accurately and confidently with the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) provides a solid foundation for the more difficult Mathematics that children will encounter throughout prep school and beyond. Automaticity with multiplication tables deserves a special mention here, as tables knowledge is crucial to many topics. Instant recall of tables facts frees up a child’s brain to concentrate on more complex problems. Regular opportunities to practise tables (two to twelve) will boost the confidence of any child who has not yet mastered them. Little and often works best, and there is a vast array of online games and apps available, including ‘Hit the Button.’

Finally, it is important that children make time for relaxation and play; a rested brain works more efficiently than a tired one. Happy holidays, everyone!

leftColBody

For the first time in three years, we came together as a school community to walk the 11 miles around the Pentland Hills in aid of our three school charities Tailor Ed, Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) and Kids Love Clothes. It was lovely to welcome parents back to do the walk with their children and also a number of former pupils who joined in the fun. It was a real challenge this year with high winds and mist on top of the hills, but children showed great fortitude and resilience as they completed the annual charity walk.

IMG 1124On Monday 4th July P3 gave a concert to friends and family to celebrate their musical achievements thus far. In addition to solo performances from all those learning an instrument, the whole year group played in a recorder ensemble. For almost every performer, this was their first experience of a live concert and the calm and poised way they conducted themselves was incredibly impressive, especially given their age. The whole concert was rounded off with an energetic performance of ‘Spread a Little Happiness’ – something that the children had definitely done based on the reaction of their audience! Thank you, P3: we really look forward to having you in the Upper School and watching your future musical progress!

introTextWell played, girls!
leftColBody

Cargilfield started the game by batting; Helene and Lottie stepped up as our first pair. There was some outstanding batting from these two scoring 19 runs in the first two overs. Athena and Scarlett followed and from benefiting from a few no balls, we clocked a further 21 runs. Shriyaa and Rosanna continued by being a strong team, with a few 4s. We had a couple of hit wickets but this did not deter them. Millie and Aglaya had fantastic communication, showing clear decisions of whether to run or not; 18 runs between them! Our final pair, Nancy and Emilia, concluded our batting team. They had super hits but erred on the side of caution; be a little braver next time girls, as your hitting gave you time. They managed to hit a couple of 4s so again, a strong finish to the line-up.

The success of batting gave the girls confidence going into the field. Their bowling was tight and we gave very few runs away with no balls. A super catch from Nancy meant that she caught out one of Ardvreck’s batters. The girls’ fielding was enthusiastic, communicative and some fantastic long-barrier blocks. A super job, girls!

Final score: Cargilfield Win 273 runs to 240
