Another nail biting win for 2ndXI!

A super game of cricket with Loretto.

Cargilfield won by 8 runs.

On a cold afternoon at Newfield, Nico won the toss and elected to bat. Tom B and Alex P opened and made a solid start despite the best efforts of their excellent opening bowler who was very quick! Most of the runs were quick singles and when Alex P fell to a well taken catch, Edo came in to hit 7 from 6 balls. This was a better strike rate but he was out LBW after swinging at a very straight delivery. Nico batted well making 10 from 21 with some good running between the wickets and then Charlie backed him up with some terrific shots. When Nico was caught, Fergus helped the scoreboard tick over with some well taken singles and twos. Charlie finished 31* after making 10 in the final over.

The target for Loretto was 99 to win.

Joshua opened the bowling with Freddie and it was he who took the first wicket. Freddie also took a great catch from Maclean’s opening delivery but the Loretto players were beginning to build a good total with some well taken shots, particularly to the leg side. Their number 3, 4 and 5 players made the biggest impact and it took some accurate bowling from Nico and Alex P to take two of those wickets. Tom B took the next two wickets as Loretto pushed hard but just fell short by 8 runs.

Man of the match was Charlie for his match-winning innings of 31 not out but credit to Maclean for his catching and bowling. Overall, this was a good performance with the bat and in what were torrid conditions with slippery ground in the field, we coped well and dug in. Well played, boys.
