P2 visit Lauriston Castle

Learning about animals and habitats

This term P2 are learning about animals and the habitats they live in. We have learnt that a habitat is a place where plants and animals live and that a habitat provides them with food, water, air, and space to help them live, grow, and keep safe. Armed with this knowledge, we put our walking boots on and headed outdoors to see what habitats we could find in the grounds of Lauriston Castle.

We found small openings among tree roots, and a hollow half way up a tree. We looked among the dead leaves and branches lying on the ground and lifted rocks to see what was underneath. We even found an old tree stump with plants living on, around and under it and lots of little holes with animals no doubt sheltering inside. We ventured across to the pond to see what animals and plants we might find living in this watery habitat, and marveled at the waterfall cascading over the rocks into a pool no doubt home to many unseen creatures swimming below its surface. We took some photographs and will be using the Book Creator App on the iPads to create a poster showing all the different habitats we found on our exploration of this wonderful woodland.
