On Wednesday afternoon, some of the children in Forms 6, 7 and 8 set out to Pentlands to climb Hare Hill and find the crashed German Junkers JU-88 plane from World War II. The story goes that on 24th March 1943, the plane, carrying crewmembers: Fritz Foerster, Horst Bluhm, Heinz Kristall, and Willi Euler, flew across the North Sea to bomb the Leith docks. When they couldn't find the docks due to dense fog, they turned around and crashed into the side of Hare Hill. After the crash, members of the local community gave the four men a burial, and in 1999, Kenneth Walker spent several years searching for wreckage and creating a small memorial cairn in memory of these men. If anyone would like to visit the crash site themselves, the 10 digit grid reference is: NT 16960 62142. It is also marked on the map in the photo gallery with a red dot.
