U9 Rounders lost to St Mary's

Lots to learn from today

U9 Rounders v St Mary’s

Lost 20½- 8½

The Under 9 A team took on St Mary’s down in sunny Melrose. Lotte our captain elected to field first. Isla bowled well and managed to give away no half rounders for no balls. St Mary’s were very strong batters however and they scored nine rounders in the first innings off good hits with only a few due to inaccurate fielding. Livia and Helena worked well as a second post backstop combination but some of the other fielders needed to be more alert. Helena took a great catch from a backwards hit.

When Cargilfield went into bat St Mary’s quickly showed their greater experience and fielding ability. Several of our girls were run out following super-fast passes to second and some lack of care in looking ahead. Jemima did well scoring 2 rounders but St Mary’s managed to get all of the girls out at 17 balls. We missed out on 13 balls. We decided to play 20 good balls for the second innings and went in determined to field more tightly. We did manage better initially but then St Mary’s starting hitting the balls far and into the nettles. They scored a further 9½.

We knew what we had to do in our final innings but it was an uphill struggle. Livia was our standout player scoring a total of 4 runs. She even had to battle on her own as the last man standing. We did manage a further 6½ rounders but it was not to be. We were well beaten by a stronger team. We did well to keep on trying and we can be proud of our score and our attitude. Well-tried girls!

Final score Cargilfield 12½ St Mary’s 20½
