The children present for this week's Wednesday lecture were in for a real canine treat today as they learnt all about training the working gun dog. Raymond from Walkerton Gundogs talked about the different training equipment, from showing us how to make sure a slip lead was put on safely so as not to harm the dog, to the various 'dummies' that help train with retrieval. We then moved outside to see it in action. First up was Ruby, an 8 year old English springer spaniel that Raymond confessed hadn't had any formal training for over a year. She did him proud as she had remembered all the commands and gave a fantastic demonstration of being sent for the retrieve. Then Beau followed; a 2 year old English springer spaniel. He too was superb with his obedience. I think it's safe to say everybody fell in love with Ruby and Beau, especially after being able to stroke them at the end!
