U11 Rugby Tour to Newcastle

U11 Rugby Tour to Newcastle

Lots of fun, on and off the pitch!

The U11 touring rugby squad set off on Saturday 12th Nov for our first game at Jedburgh RFC, where we played in a triangle with Jedburgh and Kelso. Both matches were feisty and tested our resolve as the boys from the borders played good, physical rugby. We managed to play with a bit more structure, which allowed us to find some gaps out wide that we exploited well. It was great to see the boys sitting down together for some lasagne after the game and we were warmly hosted. After match tea, our three pipers played for the Jedburgh men’s 2nd XV as they ran out onto the pitch, which was fun.

After enjoying a bit of the men’s game, we continued our short journey to Newcastle where we checked into the superb Crowne Plaza hotel.

After a swim and some drinks in the bar, the boys had a delicious meal together in the restaurant before settling down for the night.

On Sunday we woke for a leisurely breakfast, which we all enjoyed, except perhaps Mr Lush who had an unexpectedly delicate constitution after Saturday’s fun. We then set off to play Mowden Hall, which is about 10 miles west of Newcastle. It was a bit of a stop start game, which caused some frustration, but besides that, the boys showed composure and tenacity to win the second half in convincing fashion. After a delicious roast lamb lunch with the boys from Mowden, we based ourselves back at the hotel where we watched some of the international rugby. After a short rest we headed out and played a great game of ten pin bowling before heading back to the hotel for a swim. That evening we all went out together for a brilliant meal at Punks Pizza.

Three wins from three lined us up nicely for our final game at Newcastle Prep on Monday. We arrived earlier so the children could take part in a fun general knowledge quiz with the Newcastle Prep children, which was great to see everyone getting along so well.

After the quiz, we set off out to play our last game of rugby on tour and what a game we enjoyed! It was a terrific display of U11 rugby with both teams playing brave, combative rugby, cheered on by a large crowd at the side of the pitch. It was an exciting atmosphere and both teams raised their game. We played some outstanding rugby, passing the ball well from one side to another, strong in the rucks, moving the ball quickly and keeping hold of the ball. In defence, we were aggressive and kept tackling all game. There were some amazing team tries with multiple phases, which was impressive to watch. It was very rewarding to see how the shape, structure and flow of their rugby has improved and developed so much.

As well as the rugby, the boys impressed off the pitch too. They were polite, smart and good fun, earning praise from more than one member of staff at the hotel. It was a very enjoyable and successful few days.
