U13A Netball lost to St Mary's

A tough start to the season

The U13 girls headed down to Melrose and were excited for their first game of the season. With the squads still being established and with only two training sessions under their belts the team for this fixture were Maddie, Jess, Lexie, Scarlett, Izzy, Esme, Miranda, Tunrayo and Julia.

The game started off fairly slow and steady from both teams with the ball going back and forth across the court with an equal score at the end of the first quarter.

Maddie and Tunrayo (GK) were being challenged by their very tall GS from St Mary’s however throughout the game they made a large number of good interceptions jumping high and stopping her from getting the ball. The second quarter the team started to gel better however they were finding catching the ball at times and not letting their overall body movement flow a challenge. Julia and Miranda were shooting well and started to get to know each other as a shooting partnership on court, helping the team gain valuable points. They are both very calm and collected under pressure.

Our central court players, Lexie, Tunrayo, Esme, Scarlett, Izzy and Jess were working hard to get the ball up the court and intercepting as many passes as they could. St Mary’s were a challenging team that were hungry for the ball making our players jobs much harder!

There is a lot to focus on over the coming weeks including communication, basic passing and throwing and moving into a space to receive the pass. Our shooting team needs to continue to get to know each other on the court and start to read each other’s play. The central court play needs to be slickers moving the ball up the court fast and accurately and using the right type of pass at the time of play.

The team is very versatile with a number of players being able to play many positions which will be a huge asset.

1st quarter 7/7, 2nd quarter 4/5, 3rd quarter 5/8, 4th quarter 2/8, Final Score 18/29
