U11 Boys win Craigclowan Hockey Tournament

A fabulous team effort!

The Craigclowan hockey festival is always a great occasion and a squad of ten Cargilfield Form 6 boys travelled up to Perth full of excitement.

The opening pool game was against ESMS and this was a tense affair. We dominated the ball but could only get a single goal despite having a few chances. We weren't as ruthless as we should have been and some of our crosses were too strong for our players in front of goal to finish. However, the movement of the ESMS boys was good and they played some nice passing hockey. It was a slow start to the competition but a win is a win and we took that into the next pools games against Ardvreck and Craigclowan B. Our three subs who didn't feature in the opening game, played some super hockey in both of the other pool games as we began pass the ball around much more confidently and accurately. There were some great moves in both games with all of our attacking players Leo, Oliver and Theo getting in amongst the goals. Arthur was playing on the right very well indeed and set up many of our goals with his accurate crosses. Winning those two games 4-0 meant that we were in the final against Belhaven who were the only side at the tournament we had not played against this season and therefore an unknown.

With Belhaven drawing two and winning one match in their strong pool, we knew we had to be at the top of our game to win. Toby chose to start with the ball after winning 'rock, paper, scissors' and at the whistle, he turned 180 degrees and went on the attack immediately, beating two players and after his first attempted shot was blocked, it fell kindly to him and he found the far corner of the goal to start the final one nil up in the opening seconds. To get your noses in front so early does settle the nerves and we managed to build on that with another goal from our strong midfielder Caspian and then our lively striker Theo to take a commanding lead at half time. Belhaven came out in the second half and managed to get one back after we failed to pick up the second runner at a penalty corner. It was testament to our solid defence consisting of goalkeeper Jamie and defenders Edward, James, Caspian, Blake and Oliver, however, that that had been the first goal we had conceded all tournament. Despite a bit more pressure from Belhaven, we held on to secure the tournament win with a 3-1 victory.

Well done to the boys on playing some terrific hockey. Our decision making at crucial times needs a little work but we are improving each week in terms of moving the ball around the pitch.

A big thank you to our terrific travelling support and a huge thank you to Craigclowan for hosting such a super event.
