Perhaps the first proper summer’s day of the term and a perfect one for welcoming our friends from Belhaven for an afternoon of cricket. Sadly, we once again lost the toss and had to bowl first which was disappointing to say the least.
However, Xander and Ewan bowled extremely well first up and reduced Belhaven to 16 for 5 and the game was as good as over; that said, their 6ft 2 number 7 came in and hit the ball very hard on the legside and bludgeoned his way to 49 which took them up to a respectable total of 86 before we bowled them out at the end of the 14th over. Dexter came on at the end and took 3 wickets in his only over to wrap the innings up – a super over and he bowled very straight and Thabo and Monty took good catches. We gave away 21 extras which was a little disappointing today, but we used 8 bowlers and once again, the merits of bowling at the stumps was there for all to see.
In reply, Charles and Izzy opened up and put on a rapid 27 before Izzy missed a straight one in the 3rd over. Thereafter, Conrad and Charles proceeded to play some excellent cricket, punishing anything wayward and running well between the wickets; Charles top edged a pull to the keeper for 25, but Conrad and Felix put on an unbeaten partnership of 31 for the 4thwicket and saw us home after two balls of the 10th over. Conrad batter really well, getting an unbeaten 34 off 24 balls and it was great to see him playing correctly but also not being afraid to hit the ball if it was there to be hit. A terrific innings indeed and a very comfortable win.
The end of the first half of the season, and we have played some excellent cricket thus far, and I have been really pleased to see the way we have taken on the opposition bowlers and not allowed them to settle in to a rhythm by running hard between the wickets and then latching on to anything wide or short. Our bowling has been outstanding: we bowl straight and we have lots of options which is testament to all the hard work you have done over the winter.
It has been terrific to watch from the middle and I look forward to more of the same after half term. Well played, everyone!
