The 3rds hockey team hosted Belhaven on Wednesday for their first 7-a-side game of the season. With one less player, the boys realised how much more space there was to cover in defence but conversely how much more room in attack there was too.
For the first few minutes the game looked to be well matched, until after a little bit of dribbling magic by Sebastien provided the space to pass the ball into the net. After that the game went Cargilfield’s way.
A minute later, Sebastien again produced a moment of brilliance with a fantastic shot from the edge of the D that rocketed into the top left corner of the goal. At the back, Albie made some crucial saves after Belhaven managed to wriggle through the defence a couple of times. The game was a little scrappy for the remainder of the first half but the boys nevertheless managed to score a couple more times with only a blip in concentration resulting in Belhaven scoring a goal of their own.
In the second half we changed the formation, which allowed for more dynamic passing attack, leaving only Hugo in defence, although supported by two holding midfielders, Alexander and Ollie. The wings, Seb and Jaime could spread wide in attack and this stretched the Belhaven defence further and created more space in the middle, which Finlay and Ned exploited well. The boys put together some marvellous periods of crisp and accurate passing and many more scoring opportunities were created, some of which were converted.
The boys achieved a convincing win, scored about 20 goals, but it was well-earned through hard work and some great team play.
