1stVII Runners Up at the Loretto Sevens
A terrific day of rugby which ended with defeat to Belhaven in the Final, but the boys can take so much from what was a hugely positive and encouraging day with some outstanding sevens on show. Despite missing one or two boys, others came in and did a great job, and despite losing Todd, the skipper, in the second game, we really dug deep and every member of the squad played their part in the team’s success.
To many neutral observers, we played the best rugby of the day and it was lovely to see the ball being moved from side to side, reloading and going again, working defences across the field until the gap appeared – traditional sevens but that needs fitness, concentration, patience, high skill levels and the ability to perform under pressure, something we showed in bucketfuls today.
Belhaven deservedly won the Final, but we ran them close, and it was a couple of defensive lapses which gifted them two tries which was the difference in the end. We certainly have a solid base on which to build before the Ardvreck Sevens at the end of half term, and if we can tighten up defensively, and not give away silly tries when we are ahead, then it could be a different story when we head up to Crieff.
An excellent day in so many ways and although there were a lot of tired bodies at the end, I could not have asked much more. Another day to be very proud of this group of boys.
