One of our most closely fought local rivalries lived up to expectations this afternoon in a match where the result was only decided in the last minute.
The girls took a little time to settle and were probably unsettled by their strange new coach. Positional play initially went out of the window but Fettes weren’t able to capitalize and allowed Cargilfield to settle down and play with more discipline.
We found ourselves able to move the ball forward with some accuracy and incision and, despite allowing Fettes too much space to score their first goal, went into half-time with a 2-1 lead. Poppy and Clara took their chances well.
Losing Katinka soon after half-time did put us under more pressure but Isabelle and Hannah were solid in defence, often stepping up to make well-timed interceptions and tackles.
Sadly, Fettes’ growing confidence seemed to tell in the second half and we were less good at covering the ground as we had before half-time. Two goals went in near to the end and victory was snatched from us.
It was a super game in which Valentina made a number of good saves and in which our defence looked solid. I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to see the girls play and will watch their progress with interest!
