U11A Girs lost to Ardvreck

U11A Girs lost to Ardvreck

A terrific game of hockey!

This was a terrific tussle against what is easily the strongest opposition we have faced on the Scottish Circuit this season. The match was evenly poised throughout with chances at both ends. We set up quite defensively at the start leaving Mariella high as our outlet.  She held the ball up well and played it back to the on-rushing attack of Lottie and Anna who were like dynamite in midfield, working hard for the team.  Lottie led the team from the start by taking free hits quickly and Anna showed a lot of skill on the ball and forced her way through to pass the ball up to Annika on the left or Esme who had a bit of a free reign in attack.  Esme had a really good chance early on but the ball was touched onto the post and then just went wide.  Judith intercepted passes and thwarted many Ardvreck chances along with Amalia who kept her stick down and cleared the ball when she could.

In the second half the deadlock was broken when we allowed an Ardvreck defender to waltz in from a long corner and put the ball past Natasha.  Anna the restart with a self-pass and turned to pass to Mariella.  Lottie received the ball from her team mate and shot but the ball came back to Anna who smashed it into the goal.  It was a terrific response so soon from going a goal down.  The game could have gone either way and given the chances both teams had, no one really deserved to lose.  Natasha had made some terrific blocks but Ardvreck got back in front with 5 minutes to go after a through ball caught our defence square and their forward player had time and space to shoot.  The next few minutes were spent camped up at the Ardvreck goal but Ardvreck‚Äôs keeper stood firm and some of our shots went agonizingly wide.  The best chance came when Annika passed to Anna who shot to towards the top corner only for the defender to raise her stick up and deflect the ball away to safety.

At the final whistle, it was almost dark but we had witnessed a terrifically exciting game of hockey between two very evenly matched teams.  Well done to Ardvreck who played some outstanding hockey and bad luck to our girls who matched them toe to toe with the score line being the only difference.

There were some great performances from the girls with Judith at the back to Anna showing great determination to burst forward but Lottie was the player of the match, not only for captaining and leading her team so well but she covered more of the pitch than anyone else and showed intelligence to move in to cover players who had moved out of position.
