U11 Rugby beat St Mary's, Melrose

A terrific game of rugby!

U11A Rugby v St Mary’s

6-5 win

Cargilfield hosted a talented, quick Rugby team from St Mary’s Melrose today and it we were entertained with a competitive, skilful game of U11 Rugby. We started with our customary sleepiness, conceding 2 tries before we started playing properly. It took a thunderous tackle from our captain, Caspian, to wake the boys up and get them into the game. We scored three tries in a row, as the St Mary’s boys tired and more space opened up along the wings. Wilf scored in the corner first with some good passes from Leonardo and James. Theo showed great strength to muscle over for our next try and then Oliver showed electric feet to dodge past a few defenders to score. Despite heavy rain and wind, both teams passed the ball around well and tried to keep the wingers with plenty ball in hand. The St Mary’s boys competed well at the breakdown and turned the ball over well a number of times. They managed to score a great try just before half time, leaving the game poised at 3-3.

In the second half, the even match continued with both teams scoring 2 terrific tries each. It was a nail-biting finish as Cargilfield pressed hard on the St Mary’s try line. A charged down kick almost saw Miguel go over. A strong charge from Jamie came close to scoring by brave defence also just kept out. It looked like Theo had scored for sure before somehow a last-ditch tackle managed to keep him inches short of the line. The St Mary’s boys cleared with a super kick but, luckily for us, Hamish was the quickest boy back. He gathered the ball and ran back hard into the advancing green shirts. Lochy was quick to support at the following ruck and Edward linked well to set up another phase. Hamish chose a super line outside the defence and managed to sprint in from around half way. The St Mary’s boys mounted one last attack but their runner was slowed down by Theo before being solidly tackled into touch by Vice-Captain Jamie to end the game. It was a narrow victory and a great game, which was very even between both sides. We played some good rugby and I hope the boys can take some confidence into the Loretto 7’s on Sunday.

Well played, boys.
