Another impressive team performance!

St Mary’s, Melrose 49 all out

Cargilfield 52 – 3

Another Wednesday and another perfect afternoon for cricket, this week in the beautiful picturesque town of Melrose down in the Borders. We were playing at Melrose Cricket Club, just a five minute drive from the school, and what a lovely little cricket ground it was with a true surface and long boundaries which forced the batsmen to run hard!

Unfortunately, Edward called wrongly and we lost the toss. St Mary’s elected to bat which was disappointing as we knew the strength of their team and it would have been the ideal game to give some time at the crease for those batsmen who had not had much of a bat so far this term. It was not to be, and therefore we would show the opposition what a strong bowling line up we had instead.

Edward opened the bowling and in his three over spell he took three wickets, conceded just one run and the game was done. He bowled their opening bat behind his legs, and then got their best batsmen caught behind with an excellent catch from Jamie. There was no way back after that. All the other bowlers chipped in which was good, but there were a couple of dropped catches which did not prove costly on this occasion. All out for 49.

In reply, I moved the batsmen around and we quickly subsided to 16 for 3 in the 4th over! Monty played across a straight one, as did Lochy and then Johnny ran without calling and was quite rightly run out……not an ideal start it has to be said. This brought Arlo in to the middle to join Miguel and I needn’t have feared, as both boys played extremely well, choosing their shots carefully, running well between the wickets and very soon the target was down to single figures and we passed their total in the 8th of our allotted 20 overs. A very comfortable win and off we headed back to the school for a lovely Match Tea!

I was impressed with how Miguel and Arlo got us over the line. No panic, playing each ball on its merit and getting across and in to line, nudging the ball in to the gaps. Miguel has not had much of a chance to bat this season, so it was good to see him making the most of his opportunity this afternoon. Well played, boys.

Next week, we welcome Belhaven to Cargilfield for what is sure to be a wonderful game of cricket!
