The 1st girls travelled up to a sunny but windy Craigclowan today for a triangular match against the hosts and Ardvreck. We played Ardvreck first and lost the toss so batted first. The girls performed strongly, with all of them looking determined to score. Suzanne was unlucky to be caught out on ball 3 but this didn’t dampen spirits. Sophie in particular was very strong and hit rounder after rounder, and the opposition simply could not field her balls back. Consistent and strong scoring from Fiona, Amelia, Ellie, Katie, Iris and Captain Calliope saw the girls dominate the match. Iris played well and it was great to see her score a fantastic rounder from what started as a backwards hit; her determination to get round was great and something which the others need to do. Ardvreck stepped in to bat and our fielding was tight, which made for a comfortable innings. Ellie put out their first player at post 2 on ball 3, and 2 more girls were put out quickly by Amelia at post 1. We kept Ardvreck off the score sheet further, and 2 catches from Suzanne at balls 19 and 21 followed by Amelia putting Elizabeth out at 1, and Sophie catching Abi saw Ardvreck reduced to 2 players. Daisy scored a half but the over was nearly done and we won the match by 11-1.
We played against Craigclowan next and Calliope’s bad luck in choosing the hand with the daisy continued and we lost the toss again! The girls were keen though to bat after such a solid game v Ardvreck. Once again, Sophie’s batting was excellent, and she was our top scorer again in the match with a total of 2 1/2. One of her hits went so far the ball was lost through the fence into a garden!
This match was a bit tighter at the start however whole rounders from Sophie, Amelia, Ellie, Calliope and Iris quickly bumped up our score. We only lost 3 of our players during the game and a steady stream of half rounders in the final few balls from a Fiona, Sophie, Iris and Calliope was enough for us to relax a bit and enjoy the final few balls. Fiona’s bowling was good and we only gave away one half rounder for 2 no balls. Our fielding was even stronger in this game and we managed to get Craigclowan out in 23 balls. Suzanne caught out Annie in the first ball and Ellie then put Susie out swiftly at 2. The triangle of Fiona, Suzanne and Amelia was slick and we put out players at post one on balls 6, 9, 10 and 11. With only 3 girls left in bat, it was difficult for them to score however they plugged on and scored a few half rounders but we managed to get them all out for 4 1/2 Rounders.
A great start to the season from the girls; well done and thanks to our supporters who were lucky enough to sit and watch 2 games in the sun!

As Craigclowan were short of girls for our seconds fixture we mixed up the teams and some of our girls joined theirs to make up 2 teams. We had a wonderful afternoon. Although it was rather chilly the rain stayed and all of our girls got plenty of opportunity to bat and field. We have some work to do before our next fixture and in particular need to put pressure on the opposition by pushing on and running to second, especially when there are only a few balls of an innings left.
