Saltires Rugby

Well played, boys!

Well done to the nine Cargilfield boys selected to team up with Fettes to represent the Saltires in this year’s representative rugby match which was led at Fettes this afternoon. There was no time for a trial game with Fettes this year, so instead, we selected 8 boys each with one more added when an unfortunate injury befall a Fettes boy. It was a real shame that our Captain of Rugby, Milo, was unable to make it, still awaiting the result of a PCR test – the new normal!  With the WOSPS v Dandylions format being changed in 2020, this was the second year of the new incarnation of something that has been a round since the 1960s, with boys from prep schools all over Scotland coming together to have their first taste of representative rugby.

The Saltires played the Thistles first (boys from Belhaven, Loretto and St Mary’s) and ran out comfortable winners, but had to play back to back and faced a strong Caledonians outfit (boys from Gordonstoun, Strathallan, Ardvreck, Craigclowan and St Leonard’s). There were a few missed tackles which allowed the opposition to get ahead and then trying to force things, the Caledonians benefitted from a couple of interceptions and it was then hard to fight back.

The Caledonians then went on to lose to the Thistles and so all three teams won one game and amazingly all three had scored the same number of points so the trophy was shared this year and was presented by former Scotland player and now Edinburgh Head Coach, Mike Blair.

A super afternoon of rugby.
