Despite spending the term at home, it has been wonderful to put on a weekly mini concert every Friday during this strange term!  So many children have sent in recordings and we have also had a number of the music teachers perform as well.  In addition, we were very fortunate to put on two concerts from former pupils earlier in the term, and we really did appreciate their support for Cargilfield during this time of remote learning.  There have also been children performing on Thursday evenings during Clap for Carers and our Pipers performed to remember the Battle of Valery in WW2.  A big thank you to Dr Allsop for all her efforts in coordinating all these musical events throughout the term - it has been a lot of fun, and great to see so many children enjoying making music at home!

Do have a look at our Facebook timeline for all this terms concerts.  The most recent one from June 26th can be seen here and here.

Good morning, everyone! As we approach the end of term, it will soon be time to say goodbye to this year's Form 8. They have been a wonderful bunch who have shown incredible resilience over the course of this term, missing out on so many of the traditional Leavers' activities, and yet they have kept going right through to the end.

Today, Mr Walker talks to them about what they learned from their Cargilfield journey and what exciting new adventures lie ahead when they start at their senior schools in September. Listen out for sharks, squids and sole, as well as a very bad Elvis Presley impression!

What a fantastic morning of books, storytelling and so many other activities all focused on books! It was our 3rd Book Festival and despite not being in school this year it was wonderful to see so many brilliant costumes from the children and staff and as well as welcoming a number of authors and storytellers for live sessions, we also dipped in to various recordings from the Hay Festival which has also gone digital this year!

The day was rounded off with the children able to tune in to lots of videos from the teachers who were reading their favourite children’s book in some very strange places!

So much fun and a big thank you to Mrs Lyell for all her hard work pulling it all together.

Many thanks to Sue Bruce from Fettes who hosted a terrific Transition session for Four 8 this morning, which included a number of former pupils from Harrow, Eton, Oundle, Westminster, Fettes_College Erskine Stewart's Melville Schools and Glenalmond College who offered their advice to our Leavers who are moving on to Senior School in September.

We were very sad to hear yesterday that our former long time fencing coach, Professor Bert Bracewell, died on Sunday. He had coached countless young boys and girls at Cargilfield over the years, with few knowing that he had been Head Coach of Scottish Fencing since 1966 and had coached many Olympians and international athletes in his time, and he was a hugely respected coach and mentor over many years.

Before half term, 2 teams of Form 7 pupils took part in the Shrewsbury School Darwin Science Competition. Competing against 21 teams from across the UK, they took part in 7 quiz rounds including: animals sounds, famous scientists, physics, chemistry and biology. Aside from mistaking a camel for a whale, they did very well, with one team coming 14th, and the other winning the competition. Well done to all of the pupils who took part, but in particular to Clemmie, Matthew, Venetia and Seb, our winning team!

introTextA moving performance from the Pipers
image/cms/resources/img7029.jpg

This morning, our pipers and chanter players play tribute to all those brave men who fought at the Battle of St Valery in Normandy, France, 80 years today when thousands of British soldiers of the 51st Highland Division were forced to surrender. Despite a heroic last stand at St Valery-en-Caux which followed nearly 10 days of fighting, the Division had to surrender when efforts to evacuate them were unsuccessful.

Back in February, we learned to do the Reel of the 51st Division during our Thursday night reeling sessions.  Sarah Grant, Rory’s Mum, spoke to us afterwards about her great uncle, Lieutenant J.E.M. ‘Jimmy’ Atkinson of the 7th Battalion The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, who wrote the reel whilst in a POW camp during the Second World War.

Captured together with the vast majority of the British 51st (Highland) Division during the Battle of Dunkirk in 1940, Atkinson spent the rest of the war as a POW in Germany. His idea of a reel with a Saint Andrew′s Cross in its key formation was intended to symbolise Scotland and the Highland Division, in adversity.

Watch the concert here.

Great to see our four lane all weather outdoor cricket facility almost finished. It will mean more girls and boys able to train in all weathers in addition to our indoor nets. Cricket 12 months a year at Cargilfield and it is great to see our girls’ programme becoming more popular with lots attending nets throughout the winter. Can’t wait to see them in use! 😢 #cargilfieldconnected

He’s done it! Set a challenge to do a mile’s exercise everyday by his P2 teacher, Mrs Quayle, Jack took this one stage further by deciding to try and cycle 100 miles before the end of June to raise £500 for The Yard. He has visited all corners of the city, including so many of the iconic sights of the capital.

Not only has he completed his challenge already but Jack has also raised over £900 which is a fantastic achievement!

Well done to Form 8 for coping so well with sitting their first day’s Common Entrance papers at home today. It has been a rite of passage for Prep School children since 1904, but it has been a little bit different in 2020 with exams being sat at home rather than in school!

Some fantastic exam signage too, I think!

We hope all Cargilfield families have enjoyed their half term break and the lovely warm weather!

Form 8 are finishing their final preparations before they take their Common Entrance exams which begin on Tuesday. It is an exam that started in 1904, providing prep school children with a rigorous entrance exam to independent senior schools at 13+.

They have all worked incredibly hard and despite the difficult circumstances they find themselves in at the moment, they are keen to sit their final exams as countless generations of Cargilfield children have done before, albeit this time at home.

The papers have all been packed up and will be hand delivered to families over the weekend!

Cargilfield Connected

We can’t welcome you to our grounds right now, but we can offer you a virtual tour and we can answer questions via email or telephone. We especially like to chat face-to-face on a video call.

We have places available for 2020 entry in most year groups.

For now, we hope that this video, presented by our Headmaster, Mr Rob Taylor, will give you a flavour of what life is like here at Cargilfield. Our website and social media channels are kept up to date and hold a wealth of information about our school.

Our Registrar, Fiona Craig is available to contact via email: registrar@cargilfield.com and she will be happy to help you.
