introTextExcitement building about Tokyo 2020!
leftColBody

As our P2 year draws to a close, the children have been learning about the Olympics. We have looked at the Olympic Rings and how they represent the togetherness of the five inhabited continents. We know that the colours were chosen because every country or nation which takes part has at least one of these colours in its national flag. We then created our own copy of the Olympic rings in a variety of ways using paint and different objects around the classroom. We got crafty with another Olympic symbol, the Olympic torch, and created our own. P2 were now ready to stage their very own mini-Olympic games.

P2 first traveled to Olympia in Greece wearing laurel wreaths on their heads. The rays of the midday sun kindled their Olympic flame and the torch relay began. Our P2 runners held their torches high as they ran each leg of the journey round the school grounds until finally reaching their destination, Tokyo. The cauldron was lit and the P2 Olympics began.

As each country battled against each other in the sporting events, we were reminded of the Olympic slogan, “Faster, Higher and Stronger”. There was the spear and discus throwing contest reminiscent of the Ancient Games. This brought in the height element, and the hurdles event which followed added the speed. The ‘rock squat’ required strength as weights were held in each hand and squats were counted. Jumps were then made over a bar as a minute was timed. Each competing team was pushed to its limits. Scores were recorded and points were given.

With the sporting events concluded, the medal ceremony then took place. The winning countries were announced and took their place on the podium as the medals were awarded. The flame in the cauldron was then extinguished as the P2 mini-Olympics sadly drew to a close with every competitor a worthy winner!

An excellent article about the growing popularity of girls’ cricket in Prep Schools in The Times today. We are looking forward to our girls taking part in our winter cricket programme to build on what we have achieved this summer. Girls love cricket at Cargilfield!

‘Girls bowled over by Cricket not Rounders’

The thwack of leather on willow has been the sound of summer for generations of boys but cricket is now soaring in popularity among young schoolgirl .

Prep schools say the number of girls playing cricket almost doubled in two years and that twice as many are registered for cricket matches as their male classmates next year.

Many congratulations to George who has won June’s Scottish Book Trust 50 word writing competition with his story based on a ‘Sunrise’!

Here is his winning story in the 5-11 category:

I am a great ball of fire in the sky. I chase the moon away while I wake the glistening earth sparkling with coral and grass. The flowers say hello as they peep out of their petals. I notice the animals growling, howling and roaring. And I say hello.

Despite being unable to rehearse for most of the year, our Form 8 pipers and drummers worked really hard in the second half of term to come together and play once again as a band. They performed in Ash Court before Prize Giving on Friday.

Despite being unable to rehearse for most of the year, our Form 8 pipers and drummers worked really hard in the second half of term to come together and play once again as a band. They performed in Ash Court before Prize Giving on Friday.

A fond farewell to Mrs Aitchison who leaves us today as she and her family move south. She has been an inspirational Head of our Nursery for many years and will be hugely missed. Thank you for everything you have done to provide such a positive learning environment for our young children and good luck!

This morning, the final act of the Summer Term, and the end of this extraordinary year, with Form 8 Prize Giving. A fabulous group of children: hugely talented, optimistic, resilient and kind. We shall miss you!

It was lovely to be able to have a Prize Giving in person even if we were not allowed to have any parents due to restrictions in place  However, it was live streamed on our You Tube channel for parents and relatives to enjoy at home.

Good luck in your exciting new adventures in September and haste ye back!

Well done to all our performers from the Pre Prep who have worked so hard on their music over the course of this year, both in their remote lessons at home and when we returned to school. Thanks also to our talented team of music teachers who have showed such resourcefulness and kept the children going through this challenging year. We hope you enjoy the concert: lots of lovely pieces and also some group performances which the children really enjoyed putting together!

introTextA fun day in the sunshine!
leftColBody

This week saw P2 setting out on their hike around the Pentland Hills Circuit. The clouds were covering our first destination which was Turnhouse Hill so we set off in relatively cool temperatures. The sun, however, soon burnt away the clouds and it was a relief when we reached the shade of the trees after a steep and hot climb. After a brief snack and refreshing drink we set off again with renewed energy.

The summit of Carnethy Hill was a daunting prospect as it came into view but we stepped out determined to reach its dizzy height despite the sun turning on the heat. We finally reached the summit and were grateful for the cooling breeze that greeted us and the chance to sit down and rest our weary legs. We gathered speed on the descent and finally reached our lunch spot beside Logan Burn dipping our tired feet in the cool waters of the stream and having lots of fun together.

The long road stretching endlessly beside the Loganlea and Glencorse reservoirs offered a further challenge but the children showed great resilience and kept on walking in cheerful spirits determined to reach their goal. Not a moan was heard from anyone. After five hours of relentless walking a small band of weary children arrived back at Flotterstone car park with smiling beams on their tired faces. They were so proud of themselves and what they had achieved. Well done, P2!

Cargilfield Connected

We can’t welcome you to our grounds right now, but we can offer you a virtual tour and we can answer questions via email or telephone. We especially like to chat face-to-face on a video call.

We have places available for 2021 entry in most year groups.

For now, we hope that this video, presented by our Headmaster, Mr Rob Taylor, will give you a flavour of what life is like here at Cargilfield. Our website and social media channels are kept up to date and hold a wealth of information about our school.

Our Registrar, Fiona Craig is available to contact via email: [email protected] and she will be happy to help you. Thank you
