2ndXV draw with Fettes

A last minute conversion draws the game!

On a blustery September afternoon our 2nd XV made the short trip over to Inverleith to play our neighbours Fettes. The Cramond men started fabulously, receiving a ball straight from the kick off and stringing together over 15 phases to move from our try line to theirs with Sylvan dotting down and converting his score, against his old side. Fettes clawed their way back into the game with a score midway through the half, which levelled the score. The Barnton bandits maintained their excellent control of the ball, through some fabulous handling from Kit, James and Archie, alongside some superb contact skills from George and Freddie, however a second score did not materialise. Slightly against the run of play, Fettes scored through an electric break from their outside centre which meant they led 12-7 going into the break.

After some encouragement from the legions of travelling former pupils, the 2nd XV again got into their straps in the early stages of the second half, but again couldn’t make the pressure pay with points. This allowed Fettes to extend their lead to 19-7 with 5 minutes to go. Someone needed to grab the game by the scruff of the neck and thankfully our Form 8 forwards began to erode the Fettes defences. An industrious carry from Thabo and some fabulous offloading from Xander, Zak and William led to Xander going over in the corner. Conversion missed, 7 points down and 2 mins to go on the clock, could the boys launch a come back and fight off the demons of last week…. Thankfully for the Cargilfield chaps they did and again through some wonderful phase play were knocking on the door of an unlikely come back. Kit jinked and weaved his way through and handed off to his protector in chief William to round off a fine move. With time running out, Sylvan stepped up and slotted a brilliant kick under pressure. With seconds on the clock Cargilfield were dangerously close to giving up the game to Fettes in back to back weeks, but thankfully a lung busting effort and superb jackal from Sylvan prevented a certain score for Fettes. Nineteen points apiece was a fair reflection of the game, brilliantly refereed and played in a great spirit. Well done boys!

Final Score: Fettes 19 – Cargilfield 19

POTM: Sylvan

Try Scorers: Sylvan, William, Xander x1

Cons: Sylvan x2
