1st Girls beat St Mary's in a goal feast!

End to end stuff down in Melrose!

A fantastic explosive start from St Mary’s caught us on the back foot this week and Amy was forced to make an incredible save within the first two minutes. St Mary’s continued to pile on the pressure and their hard worked resulted in a goal. It was clear at this point that it was going to be a very good game and challenge for all girls. We began to settle a bit and we won a short corner which was well defended by St Mary’s. We quickly won another short quickly was again defended well by St Mary’s and the play broke swiftly into our attacking D where luckily Amy saved. Amelia worked the ball well from defence to Emma L, who distributed it to Flora who crossed it into Saphira and scored the first of our goals. St Mary’s looked a little unsettled by this point and Sophie had some fantastic individual play and she scored to make the score 2 -1, to us. Katie played the ball wide, creating opportunities for the girls and this is something that was particularly effective. St Mary’s had an immediate break with two shots on goals but luckily for us, missed both times.

Both schools started strong in the second half, and a foul in the D from us led to a short corner for St Mary’s which they scored from. With the game at 2 all, there was all to play for and the game went back and forth with some super saving from Amy and the St Mary’s goal keeper. Izzy scored after a bit of a scrappy attacking period in the 25 and was unlucky not to score again minutes later. Izzy and Sophie linked particularly well and a super goal from Sophie quickly followed. Our defence of Ellie, Amelia and Emma L really took control of the game at this point and it was fantastic to see them swing the ball confidently around the defence, which is something we have been working on this week. Ellie had a strong break from defence into attack and crossed the ball into the circle but we didn’t manage to score. St Mary’s piled on the pressure for the last two minutes and it took some great defending from Ellie to stop St Mary’s making a final play for a goal.
