The 4th Girls’ Hockey Team had to wait a while in the sweltering September heat before they could start. They began the game very well with Iona in midfield looking to get the ball up to her front players in Lulu and Cara. Both girls did very well to pull the defenders away and allow Emma to drive into the D and take a good shot which the keeper could do nothing about. We continued to work hard but Craigclowan played some very nice and fast-paced hockey. They scored two break away goals to lead at half time but we had defended well and Cicely and Annabella were no nonsense defenders. A quick reshuffle, allowed Cara to drop deeper into midfield and support Iona. Cara drove at the defense and had lots of attempts but we couldn’t pick up the loose balls or the rebounds from the keeper who was having an awesome game. Her opposite number in our goal, Arya wasn’t too busy thanks to Cicely and Annabella clearing everything back down to Iona and Cara. Georgia managed to play a nice pass back to Cara who squeezed the ball through the keeper’s legs to equalize. It was looking like a draw until Lulu who didn’t have too many chances, took the best one that fell to her and pushed the ball with terrific composure into the bottom corner. Overall, no one deserved to lose the match but we took our chance when it came. In terms of player of the match, it is a difficult one because everyone tried very hard. None more so than Wendy who was playing in her first every hockey match and got stuck in and ran to the ball with great enthusiasm and energy so special mention must go to her. Well played girls – what a terrific entertaining game of hockey!
