It was a real pleasure to take the Under 13 girls in the sunshine on the Gillespie astroturf this afternoon. They played with real energy and determination and were too strong for a gutsy Ardvreck team, coming out as winners by six goals to nil.
I was especially pleased by how all ten girls responded to rotating positions and yet still trying to maintain their positional discipline. Amalia captained the team and set the tone in the middle of the pitch, opening the scoring in the first quarter. Valentina was also especially effective up front for the first half and made a nuisance of herself around the Ardvreck defence.
The 6-0 scoreline might suggest that Ardvreck had few chances but that would be to underplay the determined efforts of Hattie, Emilia and Bea in defence (latterly Anne and Jacqueline moving back from their place on the wings to join them) and the unflustered presence of Lyla in goal.
I must add congratulations to Julia and Beth who also played well going forward and added to the threat that Cargilfield maintained around the Ardvreck goal. Their keeper did well to keep the score down to single figures.
The team spirit and enthusiasm of this group made for an enjoyable afternoon in the sunshine. Well done.
