P2 Dinosaur Workshop

A fascinating visit to National Museum of Scotland

This week P2 went on a dinosaur adventure at the National Museum of Scotland. We travelled all the way to the Isle of Eigg to find rocks that dated back to dinosaur times. Using the tools in our backpack we chiseled away at these rocks and found the fossilized thigh bone of a stegosaurus which roamed the island during the cretaceous period. We also found a fossilized spike and one of its plates. We followed a trail of tiny footprints the size of a robin, and found it was made by a coelophysis measuring 1.78cm long. We discovered a huge footprint belonging to a giant sauropod with its long neck and long tail. P2 just managed to fit inside it! We stumbled across a nest and marvelled how these huge creatures hatched out of an egg! Finally, we handled some fossilized dinosaur poo which was 65 million years old! After lunch we played a game of hide and seek in the animal gallery. We had to find an echidna with its sticky tongue and a mongoose flinging rocks between its legs to break an ostrich egg! We then did the Brain Buster Chilli Challenge. Did you know that an albatross has a wingspan of 3.5m and that an armadillo could not put its head into its shell because it had a bony cap to protect its head? We found out that the biggest known pterosaur had a wingspan of 11 metres, and stretched our arms out to match its length. Our highlight of the trip, however, was catching the 47 bus to and from the City, and putting our £1 bus fare into the slot!
