It was great to go over to Merchiston for their festival of rugby so early in the season. We had had a few training sessions under our belts so felt prepared and ready for some rugby. With the new trial laws set down by the SRU in place, it was going to be interesting to see how the teams faired. Two teams travelled to play 5 minute matches against Ardvreck, Fettes, St Mary’s, Loretto and Merchiston.
The A team played some great rugby by hitting the lines hard and breaking the tackles. We looked to offload and spread the ball wide but as it was early days, this didn’t always come off. Our tackling at times was outstanding but there were occasions where we didn’t quite line up our opposite man properly and we conceded a few tries due to allowing players to step around us. However, our attack was strong enough to score the tries to win a few matches closely and a couple more comfortably. Glen, James and Rory did a lot of the work and scored a few tries and Hugo, Cody and Harry were terrific at the break down.
