U11As win a thriller against Dollar!

End to end with lots of tries!

This was such a close game today that neither side went more than 2 tries up in our end to end match against Dollar this afternoon. Strong running from both sides and many missed tackles meant it was almost as high scoring as a game of basketball but both sides improved their defences in the second half. There was some lovely running and passing of the ball from Dollar who spread the ball wide to their wingers who had pace to burn which we couldn’t cope with. We took our opportunities reasonably well but were lacking that composure on the ball and often decided to take that extra yard without releasing players either side of us. Our play was a bit scrappy and we must work on keeping our shape in attack and off-loading or passing at the correct time. We kept up with the visiting side due to some tired tackling from them and our side-stepping and avoiding of contact was good.

When Dollar went 8-7 up with 3 minutes to go, it was going to take a great piece of play to get something out of the game. Our passing began to improve as we looked to get the ball wide more quickly. Rory, who was outstanding today, scored in the corner before setting up the winning try with a wonderfully timed pass to his captain, Hugo. He moved the ball forward and then off-loaded to Cody who ran in from 20 metres. Dollar had one chance to try to get the draw but a superb tackle and then a clearance kick to touch meant that we just scraped over the line.

Hugo led the team superbly well throughout, conducting himself terrifically and encouraging others but man of the match was Rory for his all-round play both in attack and defence.
