2ndXI beat Loretto

2ndXI beat Loretto

A brave performance in the rain!

It was cold, wet and windy but that didn’t dampen the spirits of both sets of players as we played a very competitive game of cricket at Cargilfield today.  We won the toss and our captain, Will, elected to field first as he predicted the weather would get worse and didn’t want his fielders standing in the cold having had to hang around when batting.  How right he was: William took 4 wickets himself with the 4th coming from a terrific catch taken by Joshua M at short fine leg.  However, the match ball went to Joshua for his hat-trick which began with dismissing their very impressive captain on 30.  There was also impressive bowling from Alexander who finished with an economy of 1.88 and Joshua M who made his debut for the 2nds today taking 1 wicket for 15 runs in 3 overs.  We bowled out Loretto for 88 but many of them played some wonderful shots which was most encouraging at this age.

It was a quick turnaround and tea was saved till the end of the match so we could try to beat the worst of the weather.  Unfortunately, it set in for the afternoon but an impressive 40 not out (retired) from Ramsay and a quick fired 19 from 21 balls from Leo saw us reach their total with just over 4 overs to spare.

Tom came in to make his batting debut for the 2nds and scored two boundaries of which his second was a nicely played shot down to the fine leg boundary to win the game.

All in all, credit must go to every player out there who braved the elements and kept their spirits up. It was a pleasure to host Loretto at Cargilfield; they were polite and encouraged one another and it was great to see 3 girls representing their team at such a high standard. The fielding throughout the team was excellent as they dived about on the wet grass and the keeper was a live wire behind the stumps, stopping everything. The Cargilfield team continue to impress with their understanding of cricket and skill. The team has rotated a lot and it has been great to see players step up and continue to produce high standards. Well done, boys!
