1st Hockey v Loretto - Won 5-4
The 1st girls had a particularly tough match today against a feisty and well drilled Loretto team. Both teams played with great spirit and determination and there was very little to split them all game.
Loretto started the match and immediately pushed the ball up high. We struggled with their attacking formation and we left our defenders isolated and under pressure. A lovely goal from Loretto shook us but we did little to address our weaknesses and we soon found ourselves 2-0 down. Luckily this was enough to really rile the girls, and we showed some grit and sheer fire in our bellies; Sophie drove the ball through hard and found Saphira who put it away. The ball returned to the centre and Izzy cheekily won the ball straight away from the Loretto centre pass, and scored a lovely reverse goal. We all heaved a sigh of temporary relief, and headed in to half time with the score at 2-2, thanks to some good saves from Caitlin.
The second half was just as entertaining with the play swinging from end to end. We scored from our slip right option at the start of the second half, but as expected, Loretto punched straight back with an equaliser. A lapse in concentration in our defence let Loretto back in to the lead but we managed a score from Sophie as a result of another short corner. With the score at 4-4, the minutes were ticking away and both teams were working their socks off. With less than 3 minutes left, Sophie launched a ball through to Saphira who scored and the match finished 5-4 to us. We were lucky to win this game and hopefully this will serve as a good lesson to make sure we are switched on from the first whistle going forwards.
2nd Hockey v Loretto
It was a short trip to Loretto for the 2s today. It was clear that the Form 7s were back, as from the beginning we were far more cohesive than last Wednesday. The most significant improvement was in our defence, with fantastic pressing and marking. This was controlled well from the back by goalie Val, as well as defence Hannah and Issy. We dominated play in the first half and scored all 3 of our goals, 2 of which came from Katinka and one from Alannah. In the second half, our standards dropped, with individuals trying to dominate play too much and play was held in the centre. Despite more Loretto attacks, these were held off and the game finished 3-0 to Cargilfield.
3rd Hockey v Loretto - Lost 2-1
The 3rd girls had a fantastic game against Loretto today. The opposition started strongly and we were lucky to have Iona on top form today, saving many strikes at goal.
Josephine lead her team well and played some lovely hockey. She had some good strikes in the circle and was rewarded for her persevere by a good goal after 7 minutes. Matilda linked well with her midfielders and drove the ball wide, drawing the Loretto girls out of position. Just before half time Loretto equalised, despite some great defending from Charlotte and Bethany.
Emma started the second half off well and was always in a good position in the circle. Despite her best efforts, she didn’t find the back of the net however this was definitely not due to lack of trying! Georgia and Rose worked hard and pushed the ball in to the circle well, but the Loretto defence held strong and turned the play round. More saves from Iona followed but despite her best efforts, we conceded a goal.
This was a very even match played in great spirits and both sets of girls should be pleased with their performance today. Well done!
4th Hockey v Loretto
The 4s stepped up for their third game of the season today and it was clear that their hard work in training is paying off as they won 5-0 against Loretto. They worked well as a team and utilised the width of the pitch well. Ruby showed off some great skills and finishing to grab 3 goals and Lottie and Malayka pushed up from midfield to score one each. Loretto had a few dangerous breaks but Arya made some fantastic saves and captain Cicily controlled the defensive line well. Plenty to work on still but some real positives to take away too. Well done girls.
