3rd Girls beat Loretto

3rd Girls beat Loretto

An excellent team performance

Due to a cancellation of a rugby fixture, I had the immense pleasure of umpiring this terrific bunch of girls who thoroughly enjoyed their game of hockey against a visiting Loretto side. When the team in red approached the astro there were whispers of, “They’re massive!”

I replied, “Don’t judge a book by its cover..” followed by, “and it’s hockey you are playing, not netball…!”

The game was end to end with Cargilfield having the lion’s share of possession and the most chances. Lara and Emilia at the back made some last-ditch tackles but Lyla and Izzy up front were threatening. Had it not been for Loretto’s excellent defence on the line, we would have gone into the break with our noses well and truly in front. Instead, after a pulsating first half of hockey, it was 3-3 and the game was finely poised.

In the second half, Rowan continued to cover every blade of astro and half-time substitute Beth, impressed with her determination to get on the ball and make tackle after tackle. Anne finished off a terrific move after a run from Dulcie, who impressed all game, down the right-hand side and put in a great cross. The celebration from Anne said it all and her beaming smile was a delight to see. It was Cargilfield’s turn to have their goal peppered and Hattie and Nadia were the ones this time to keep their sticks down and clear the danger when it presented itself.

Thanks to 4 goals from Izzy, we won the game 8-4 but it was Lexie who was player of the match with her strong runs and good skill on the ball, finding her team mates and setting up many of our chances. Well done to all the girls; it was a real pleasure taking a team who played with smiles on their faces but still showed that grit and determination to succeed!
