U11B Hockey beat Loretto

Well played, team!

Forget all that you know about sporting comebacks – U11B boys showed us what it was about today in their game against Loretto! A mixture of miscommunication, not staying in positions and our heads being elsewhere meant they finished the first half three goals down. After gathering back their thoughts in a group half-time chat, the team could see where they needed to improve – urgency and communication being the main priorities there. The second the whistle went to start the second half, Jamie (with passback possession) stormed through the not-yet-ready opposition and hit it straight to Jack who had sprinted into the D ready to touch the ball in the goal. The comeback was now on and everyone could see this! The next two goals came from Jack & Miguel respectively who smashed it to back post, both times having Max M there to tap it into the back post. Both teams were now equal in goals.

Not content with a draw, the team strived for more and more. Ethan saw a gap in the D and positioned himself perfectly to make sure Jamie’s shot was going into that goal. Jamie finally got his name on the scoresheet by swerving round the opposite team again and blasted that ball into the net. Unfortunately some bad substitute swapping on Miss J’s behalf meant that the team were a defender down when Loretto came down with force and got a lovely team goal. After very narrowly missing the goal by mere centimetres, Ethan redeemed himself not even a minute later with another goal. Loretto put some pressure on us after this time, but thankfully with Mikey, Max R and Honour in defence the Cargilfield side had nothing to worry about. It must be noted that Loretto had some fantastic defending during this section of the half as well! Another Jack smash & Ethan back post goal and we thought we had outgoaled ourselves. Wilf made a brilliant stop of the ball mid-air and passed it to Jamie who after winning a foul, played the ball so quickly that the opposition didn’t even have a chance to defend. The team should be extremely proud of themselves as they could have given up during half time but showed resilience and determination for days. Special mention should go to Wilf who came to the rescue multiple times with his constant pressure and fighting for the ball back every time they lost possession. Working forward, we should think about focusing on the game right from the start as to not have too much pressure on us. Brilliant work team!
