The sun came out and we played a 6 pairs match against St Mary’s on the Gillespie astro. Captain Florence won the toss and elected to put St Mary’s in to bat. She was terrific in the field, giving instructions on positioning to her team mates. At the start, our fielding was superb with Clara and Livia being the stand out fielders in the deep but Esme was very strong with her long barrier, not letting anything through. Alice took the first of 9 team wickets on the day after a great catch from Helena. Zinnia was the pick of the fielders with two catches and would have had a third had the delivery not been a No Ball. She also got a run out. Our best bowlers of the day were Isabelle S who took 1 wicket in 2 overs for 8 runs; Thandie who took 2 wickets in 1 over for 6 runs and Alexandra who only conceded 4 singles in her over. After 18 overs, St Mary’s had reached 278 runs. In the second half, we began slowly and had some crazy running between the wickets – having made a comfortable 2 runs on two occasions, we decided to run the extra run and were run out. We eventually reached the target of 278 with one over to go and Agus and Livia came in to bat the final over and score 10, giving us the win. Other solid batting partnerships were Esme and Isabelle (13 runs) and Lily and Thandie (12 runs). St Mary’s voted Livia as player of the match for her fielding and batting in the final over but someone who was equally valuable was Zinnia for her 2 catches and run outs.
