U11B Cricket v Fettes
Won by 17 runs
Wit After a couple of weeks without matches, the Under-11s travelled across to Fettes to play a soft ball pairs match. The weather was unsettled and just before the first ball was bowled, the heavens opened with a combination of hail and rain, so we took shelter for 15 minutes and then enjoyed quite a sunny afternoon after that.
Having lost the toss, the Cargilfield boys took up the bat with Nick and Archer making a strong start for the team, scoring a total of 20 runs in their quota of overs. Harry and Arran then took over, keeping their wickets against some great bowling but still managing to make 11 runs. Bertie and Salman scored a commendable 19 runs in their allocation leaving the innings in a good position for Monty and David, who made 20 runs but lost 5 after a mix-up led to a runout. Seb and Timothy added 17 to the total and managed to preserve their wickets before Honour and Bertie finished off scoring 17, bringing the total to 99 runs.
The task of defending boundaries on a small astro was the next demand on the boys but they were confident in what needed to be done. The weather played its part in making the fielding a bowling less predictable than normal as the wind gusted at times and the slick astro made the ball skip on faster than normal. Our fielding wasn't quite up to our usual quality with misfields and overthrows costing us dearly on the scoreboard and by the fourth pair, Fettes were ahead by 10 runs compared to where Cargilfield was at the same time. Then up stepped Harry, who bowled a superb over, conceding a single run and taking two wickets, one of which was a confident catch by Bertie. Arran then backed that over up with an over where he gave away just 2 runs and suddenly our team was 14 runs ahead.
Nick and Archer bowled out the final two overs, securing the win by 17 runs. The game was closely contested and well done to the boys for staying in the fight, and particularly to Harry whose careful and controlled bowling earned him the well-deserved man-of-the-match accolade. Our grateful thanks to Fettes for hosting us.
