Lost 2-1
The Under-11s travelled to George Watson’s College for an eagerly anticipated match, and while the 2-1 defeat might suggest otherwise, the boys delivered a dominant performance that highlighted their potential and promise for the future.
The game started brightly, with our team asserting control through crisp passing and excellent movement off the ball. Harry gave us an early lead with a well-taken goal, and in the opening minutes of the game, we looked comfortable.
A controversial turning point arrived when George Watson’s were awarded a free hit. The ball was played straight into the D – an infringement that went unnoticed – and their unmarked forward got the equaliser. Moments later, a lapse in defensive positioning left our backline too high up the pitch. Their three attackers broke free, leaving goalkeeper, Faris exposed and helpless as they slotted home their second goal.
Despite this setback, the boys regrouped and dominated the remainder of the match. We created a plethora of chances, with much of our attacking play showcasing great energy and quick, accurate passing. However, composure in front of goal eluded us. Time and again, shots veered narrowly to the right, and if the goalposts had been three meters wider, we might have scored ten!
The standout player of the day was Nick as our defensive midfielder. His composure on the ball and vision to start attacks from the back were exemplary. However, all the players brought tireless energy to the game and I am really proud of how they played as a team throughout.
Though the final whistle confirmed a 2-1 loss, the score line failed to reflect the game’s true story. The boys played a brand of hockey that was fast, skilful, and exciting to watch. Against a big school like George Watson’s, this performance was a testament to the team’s ability and potential.
Well done to all the boys for their effort and attitude. With continued focus and refinement, the future for this group is incredibly bright as we look ahead to next term. Bad luck today, but an excellent display overall!
