introTextA Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols
leftColBody

Even though we were unable to welcome parents to this year's Carol Service, the Upper `School and staff assembled in Chapel for this year's traditional Service of Nine Lessons and Carols on the final afternoon of term.  With our Chapel Choir yet to start up under current restrictions, we have been singing in year group choirs, and it was lovely to hear all four of our choirs taking part in this year's Carol Service, and thank you to all the children for working so hard with Dr Allsop in their rehearsals over the past couple of weeks.  The readers were excellent and it was lovely to hear the congregation joining in with well known carols as we came together in Chapel for only the second time since March 2020.

The Service was live streamed on our YouTube Channel for parents to watch at home, and we welcomed a number of parents and former pupils afterwards for Carols outside in Ash Court afterwards which brought the term to an end.

Many thanks to the whole Cargilfield community for all their support during the challenges of this term, and we wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

introTextA lovely Christmas Service!
leftColBody

A successful and cheery Pre Prep Carol Service! In the Chapel there was loud singing by the children, clear readings of prayers by P2 and the Christmas story read by P3 in costume. Afterwards, the Pre Prep gathered on the Headmaster’s lawn for some fantastic singing with parents. Well done to all the children for remembering their words and being so enthusiastic presenting the story of Christ in words and song.

introTextAn outdoor performance!
leftColBody

It has been such a joy performing our outdoor nativity this week on Wednesday and Thursday to the nursery parents. We really hope that the parents enjoyed coming to watch the performance as much as we enjoyed performing! Despite the wind and rain, it was lovely to see so many parents come along to support the children.

leftColBody

The Pre Prep had fun making Christingles this week and P2 led a short service in the chapel with all the children sitting around the Christmas tree. They explained each part of the Christingle. They told us that the orange represents the world, the cocktail sticks stand for the four seasons and the red ribbon reminds us of God’s love. The sweets represent God’s beautiful creation and all His good gifts and the candle shows the light of Jesus bringing hope to our world. We concluded with a short Christingle prayer asking God to bless the children as the little lights were glowing in their hands.

introTextA fun game of Touch!
leftColBody

This the second time the Cargilfield and Loretto Under-10s had met for a touch rugby game this term; whereas the first was a somewhat quieter affair, this match was full of competitive action. Loretto took advantage of their kick-off by making excellent progress up the field during their first set of 6 touches, leaving them within yards of the try line. Cargilfield managed to regain some territory during the next phase, but Loretto used their next set to score. The game became hard fought after that, both teams were outstanding in defence and managed to keep the other at bay for quite some time until some smooth passing from wing to wing allowed the Cargilfield boys to level the score. Edward, Caspian and Toby pressed very well in defence in the second half which created more opportunities - some of these chances were lost due to handling errors but several were converted too. Loretto managed to score a couple of tries of their own too with the game ending in a narrow victory to Cargilfield.

Well done to the boys on both teams for a tremendous effort.

perch_introTextA fun game of Touch!
perch_leftColBody

U12 Boys Hockey v George Watson’s

Result 1:1

After a long term of rugby, the boys played an even and well-contested game of hockey at George Watson’s. I was impressed with how quickly the boys started the game, working their way into many scoring opportunities and threatening their keeper from the outset. We just couldn’t quite find the finish we needed, though and we let a number of strong scoring chances go.

Zak, Ewan and Conrad played really well in the mid-field, working hard and dominating the middle of the pitch. They linked up quite well with Paddy and Kit on the wings but looking for the space out wide is an area for us to work on. After sustained pressure, a goal eventually came and I thought we would follow on with more. Not to be, though, and all credit to the Watson’s boys who took the game to us and scored a good counter-attack goal. Oliver, Sylvan and George defended very well, today and made some great interventions to stop more attacks. Archie made some strong kicks too and it was great to hear him communicating with his team. Thabo came on and also played well with some good touches.

The second half was quite tense with both teams realising the next goal could do it. We pressed a lot and were more ruthless with our shots in the D, but kept hitting them straight at the keeper who, to be fair, made some good saves. Despite a lot of pressure and dominating the D area, we couldn’t find that precious second goal. It was a good game though and it was great to see such excellent work-rate off the ball. Well played, boys.

introTextBoys enjoy first hockey matches!
leftColBody

For a number of years now, we have finished our rugby season with some hockey against Watson's. They brought two teams to Cargilfield today and the boys were very excited to play what for some of them was their first ever hockey match since we didn't have any in the Spring term this year.

The Watson's A team were very sharp and had some talented individuals. They moved the ball well but we were up to the challenge with some great blocks made by our defenders Theo and Monty with Wilfred in behind sweeping up. Watson's did manage to score early after we didn't clear our lines and more goals followed; however, a terrific pass from Harry up to Alexander A on the left wing cut open the Watson's defence and Alexander finished beautifully. It was great to see a couple of young Form 5 players representing the A side and Toby on the right looked lively. However, the highlight of the game was seeing Caspian scoring with a reverse hit, high into the inside side netting from a tight angle on the left. We lost 6-3 but we learned a great deal from this game and it was terrific to have such a challenge in our first game.

The B team enjoyed much success in their game with an 8-1 win. Rafa L pulled the strings in midfield with some lovely passing to Charles L on the right and Archie R's distribution at the back was excellent. Dexter was lively on the left and fed the two Form 5s in team, James M and Jamie W who scored a few goals between them. Senuka B partnered Archie in defence and was tenacious in the tackle situation, not allowing the Watson's boys many opportunities to score against Mack or Alexander who both had a half each for each team.

Well done, boys. Hopefully you all had a great time playing in your match and are willing to work hard next season.

introTextA great way to end the season!
leftColBody

We welcomed a strong and large Mary Erskine's squad to Cargilfield having had a defeat earlier in the term with some of our key players playing elsewhere. This was a much more even contest. Without an U12 goalkeeper, we drafted in the services of our two U11 boy goalkeepers who were due to play an hour later against Watson's. Both had a spell in goal and made some great saves.

Despite going 3-0 down early in the first period, we were very much in the game having had many chances but Savannah and Miranda were thwarted by their excellent keeper. Izzy, on the back of an injury, was working hard D to D and showed terrific skill on the ball, breaking down the play and looking to turn defence into attack quickly.

Tunrayo and Jess at the back were excellent after the initial leak of goals both looking to Maddie who linked well with the front four. Scarlett worked her socks off down the right, taking free hits quickly and presented the front two with lots of chances. We fought back with incredible character and scored 4 goals without reply.

At 4-3, we looked like we had the game but with just 10 seconds to go in the match, it was heartbreak as a through ball was played to their centre forward high up the pitch and she made no mistake with the finish. A draw was a fair result but the work rate of the Cargilfield girls (who played every minute as we had no subs) was fantastic and it makes for a very exciting prospect for next season as these girls hit the top of the school. Well done, girls; you should be very proud of your wonderful team performance.

Welcome to the penultimate mini concert of the term, and once again, it has been wonderful to receive so many lovely performances from children across the school, from beginner through to our much more experienced Form 8 musicians. Well done to everyone who took part and we are beginning to hear some familiar Christmas tunes in the Music School this week as we begin to get ready for our Christmas Concerts which will be available online once again. Arithmetic techniques and time saving tricks

Working quickly on paper and being able to carry out calculations in one’s head are useful skills.

The ISEB Mathematics Common Entrance examinations from Autumn 2022 are changing their aural mental arithmetic examination to a quick-fire written exam where pupils are tested on 40 short arithmetic questions in 10 minutes.

Some helpful time saving tricks are listed below. These are types of questions set at CE level but also taught lower down the school with appropriate numbers for the age group.

Double and halving

Example 1)

Twenty-four books are bought at a cost of £3.50 each. What is the total cost?

Working

24 × 3.50

÷ 2 × 2

= 12 × 7

= £84

Example 2)

Sixteen lollies are bought at a cost of £2.25 each. What is the total cost?

Working

16 × 2.25

÷ 2 × 2

= 8 × 4.50

÷ 2 × 2

= 4 × 9

= £36

Further examples

68 × 5 = 34 × 10 = 340 16 × 15 = 8 × 30 = 240 52 × 25 = 26 × 50 = 13 × 100 = 1300

Multiplying by 9, 19, 21, 29 etc.

19 footballs are bought at a cost of £25 each. What is the total cost?

Working

19 × £25 (19 lots of 25)

= 20 × 25 – 1 × 25 (20 lots of 25 subtract 1 lot of 25)

= 500 - 25

= £475

Using Approximations

Example 1)

12 T-shirts are bought at a cost of £7.99 each. What is the total cost?

Working

12 × £7.99

= 12 × £8 – 12 × 1p

= £96 – 12p

= £95.88

Example 2)

A TV sports programme starts at 14 : 35 and last for 2 hours and 55 minutes.

When does it end?

Working

Add 3 hours then jump back 5 mins. 17 : 30

Re-arranging products

Example 1)

2 × 7 × 11 × 5

= 2 × 5 × 7 × 11

= 10 × 77

= 770

Example 2)

25 × 6 × 5 × 4 × 3 × 2

= 25 × 4 × 6 × 3 × 5 × 2

= 100 × 18 × 10 = 18 000

Factorising numbers

Example 1)

437 × 99 + 437

= 437 × (99 + 1)

= 437 × 100

= 43700

Example 2) Extension

34 × 42 + 68 × 29

= 34 × (42 + 2 × 29)

= 34 × (42 + 58)

= 34 × 100

= 3400
