introTextLots of runs and wickets!
leftColBody

We travelled up to Ardvreck for our last fixture of the year, unsure as to what the weather would throw at us. However, it was lovely and sunny. Bairstow was a mixed team of U9 boys and girls. We lost the toss and Ardvreck began to bat. The first few overs were very much dominated by wide and no balls, however it became much more exciting when our captain Oliver took two wickets. Alice and Michael came in for the next two overs and Alice also took 2 wickets. This good fielding helped keep the score down and Ardvreck posted 218 for 4 wickets.

Coming into bat we started off poorly with a fabulous bowl from Archie of Ardvreck. Our progress was slow until David and Oliver, our big hitters came into bat. David managed to 3 fours and Oliver 2 fours and a six each off four balls. We did score some singles here and there and a few twos but we ahd done enough to win. We finished on 252 for 1 wicket. Well done to both the boys and the girls.

U11A Ardvreck v Cargilfield

Win 156-201

The clouds parted on a grey day for the U11As’ match against Ardvreck. After a late arrival, we headed straight into the match without a warm up. This made no difference to Val and Isla C as they opened the batting with plenty of runs, including a six each. This high standard was maintained by the rest of the team throughout the innings with Isla G’s four into the parents’ picnic deserving a mention. The girls really showed their enjoyment for batting and hunger for runs to finish with a score of 201 runs.

The success of batting gave the girls confidence going into the field. Their bowling was tight and Thalia’s wicket-maiden (including two other close catches) exhibited the best of U11As. The girls’ fielding was energetic and there was an impressive boundary saved by Savannah. Nonetheless, Ardvreck played well for their 156 but fell short of the target – well done girls!

introTextAn excellent first summer of cricket!
leftColBody

Last Cricket game of the season and our U13 girls B team enjoyed playing at home against Ardvrek. The girls won the coin toss and started in the field. Our bowling and batting pairs:

Emilia & Miranda

Lily & Beatrice

Julia & Jessica

Lyla & Sophia

Aurelia & Amenah

Lara & Amalia

The girls started off strong with Emilia and Miranda bowling really well to get 6 Wickets with Ardvrek finishing on 188. Julia and Jess also stepped up with some great bowling getting 5 wickets. Lara and Amalia has kept Ardvrek from scoring more runs with their fast bowling making it hard to hit the ball. All our pairs worked really well and put in some great bowling. Ardvreks became more consistent with their batting and seeing opportunities to score runs they grabbed them.

It was then our turn in the bats. Keeping the same batting order we discussed taking every opportunity to hit the ball and to communicate with our partner when running. This was especially evident when Aurelia and Amenah stepped up with Amenah talking a lot and making sure she and Aurelia were working as a team. Jess and Julia were very successful in the bat hitting several 4’s and well as a Jess scoring the teams only 6, finishing with a score of 42. Lily and Bea made some great run scoring 37. Lyla and Sophia put in a tremendous performance working together and taking every opportunity to hit the ball.

Well done all, on a great win!

introTextA great first season of cricket!
leftColBody

Our last cricket game of the year and we thought it would be called off after a heavy down pour in the morning. But both teams wanted to a game. We lost the toss and were put into field. We bowled consistently well and kept the score down. Ardvreck had one big over of 16 but with a couple wickets in the next few overs we kept the partnership at bay. Ardvreck posted a respectable score of 273 in their 24 overs.
Coming into bat we started off slowly with a few singles here and there but then our two big hitters then came in. We once again put ourselves in a commanding position especially after Venetia H hit 28 in one over. We continued to dominate and was a good comfortable win. Well don’t to all the girls for a great cricket season.

introTextFinal game of the season!
leftColBody

We avoided the rain that was threatened on a warm afternoon at Cargilfield for what would be for some of these boys from both schools, their last every game of Prep School Cricket.

We were put into bat and strong performances from Cameron (50* from just 20 balls), Archie and Freddie (20* each) we scored an impressive 203 runs. Credit to the Ardvreck keeper, taking a great catch behind and showed how slick he was with the gloves to take a stumping and getting very close with another.
After match tea and a chat with our opposition, we started well with the ball in hand taking 3 wickets in the first 4 overs. Our bowling was tight although in over 13, one of the Ardvreck boys managed to score a huge 6, getting the ball over the large leg-side boundary and that over, which went for 17 was a particular highlight of the Ardvreck innings. We didn't manage to bowl Ardvreck out but kept them to 78 runs giving us a fairly big victory.

Player of the match goes to Cameron for his excellent half century from just 20 deliveries - what a way to end the season!

For half of the home team, it was their last game of sport for Cargilfield. This season has been full of excellent sporting moments and some amusing ones too. I have been very impressed by the way the boys have conducted themselves on the pitch in what was an unbeaten season.

For those who are staying at Cargilfield, I have no doubt that some will be regular 1st XI players and all of them will feature at some point for the team. They have really improved over the course of the term which has been pleasing to see.

Well done, boys - to those leaving, best of luck with your cricket at senior schools.

introTextA fabulous fun filled day!

It was wonderful to welcome parents, grandparents, friends and former pupils back to Cargilfield on Saturday for our first Summer Fair for three years. The sun shone brightly, the pipe band played superbly, there was a competitive parents' cricket match, lots of fun children's stalls, the French Cafe serving coffee and crepes, a delicious BBQ and Friends of Cargilfield Pimms tent and the afternoon was brought to a close with the traditional Divisional Singing competition with an 80's theme!Thank you to all those who played a part in organising such a splendid day and we managed to raise lots of money for our school charities too.

perch_leftColBody

P1 had beautiful weather for their visit to the Royal Highland Show this week, and there was a great buzz of excitement around as it was the first show for a couple of years. The children saw all kinds of varieties of poultry, sheep, goats and cattle and were encouraged to touch the animals. They watched some showjumping from very close up and realised how enormous the jumps are. They tried to work out the criteria for success for the prize animals who were awarded rosettes by some very picky judges. There was a fantastic beekeeping experience involving making candles and taste testing honey as well as cuddling a giant bee. Lots of the children also managed to watch some stunt bike riders and sat in a Chinook helicopter too. When it all became too exhausting RHET gave the children some horse puzzles and pictures to colour. We had a fantastic day and can't wait to do it all again next year!

It was lovely to welcome a live audience and see a full Chapel at long last as the Summer Concert took place on Thursday afternoon.  With Form 8 away on camp and doing their musical items at the Leavers' Service on the final day of term, it was a chance for our musicians from Form 4 to 7 to perform and we enjoyed some fabulous music making with a huge strong orchestra starting us odd with 'Pirates of the Caribbean' and then we heard the wind band, harp group, some wonderful soloists, the Form 7 choir sang beautifully and the concert was brought to an end with some piping.  Well done to all those who performed, some for the very first time in front of a live audience, and to our team of music teachers who have worked so hard with the children to prepare them.  Thank you also to Dr Allsop for pulling everything together!

introTextA wonderful afternoon in the sunshine!
leftColBody

Cargilfield 153 (lost 4 wickets)

Craigclowan 2 (lost 15 wickets)

Clearly a very comprehensive win up in the baking hot sunshine in Perth this afternoon, and  we were much the stronger team despite a number of boys being rested this week with lots of cricket taking place for this age group between now and the end of term.  We decided to play pairs today with each pair batting for four overs which meant a good stint for all the batsmen to get in and then play some shots.  I stressed at the start that not getting out would be the key today, so sensible running between the wickets, careful shot selection and putting the bad ball away would be so important.

We only lost 4 wickets in the 22 overs we batted for which was a terrific effort, and there were no run outs which was even better! Tristan and Jamie scored the most runs, but all the batsmen chipped in and kept the score moving along.  Admittedly, the Craigclowan bowling was not great, but it is often harder to bat against weaker bowling because you relax and do not concentrate as much as when the bowling is accurate and on the stumps.  We ended up on 153 which was an excellent total and one that was going to be out of reach for our less experienced opponents.

Our bowling and fielding were top notch today: mostly pretty accurate with very few wides and we bowled straight which is so important as I often repeat the mantra that at this level 99% of batsmen get out bowled, so pitching the ball up on the stumps will bring wickets......and it certainly did today! We took 15 wickets in the 22 overs with Wilfred being the pick of the bowlers, but to be fair a number of boys bowled well including Alex and Edward, and this was backed up by some excellent fielding and catching with Wilfred taking an unbelievable catch at gulley which had to be seen to be believed - it would certainly have been on the highlights reel on the TV!  Dexter was excellent behind the stumps too, letting very few byes through and finishing off a couple of runs outs too.  In the end, Craigclowan ended up with 2 runs so a comprehensive win, but more importantly, it was lovely to see everyone in the team contributing, enjoying their cricket and working hard at their skills. All the sessions in the nets is clearly paying off and I look forward to seeing how you finish the season in the next ten days.

It was a real pleasure taking the U11s today and I was impressed with not only the skill level and enthusiasm on show, but also the way that you played the game which is such an important aspect of all sport, but particularly cricket.  Well played, boys!

Welcome to our latest mini concert and we’ll done to all our performers and their music teachers for working so hard with them.

On Thursday afternoon we enjoyed our first school concert with a live audience and it fabulous to welcome so many parents and families to Chapel to listen. So many children have not performed live ever before so after practising so hard and with the support of parents and teachers during these Covid times, having children stand up and play in front of an audience was fabulous to see! Well done to everyone!

U12A Girls vs Craigclowan

Lost by 37 runs

The girls were very keen to get out and start playing on what was a perfect day for some cricket. Playing a soft ball pairs match. We lost the toss and were put into bat. We struggled the whole innings as Craigclowan had some very good bowlers. Every time we looked to build a partnership we lost a couple wickets. Unfortunately, we could not find the gaps in the field and struggled to keep the scoreboard ticking over.

Coming out to bowl, we knew that we would have to bowl a tight line and length. We started off brilliantly taking a wicket on the 3rd ball. Our bowlers continued to impress and kept taking wickets at regular intervals. Not only was our bowling good but our fielding was brilliant especially Savannah W with 2 great catches, one, a high catch out in the deep and the second behind to stumps. Unfortunately, our heroics out in the field wasn’t enough and to keep Craigclowan at bay. Well done too both teams on a good day’s cricket.

U12B Girls vs Craigclowan

Lost by 10 runs

The sun shone on our fixture on the Gillespie astroturf with two closely matched teams (albeit Cargilfield only fielded 7 players) exhibiting their improved cricketing skills in this pairs match.

Craigclowan won the toss and opted to field. Anne and Natasha set about their first two bowlers scoring 32 runs in the first two overs although, as other girls were pinned down by accurate bowling, the urge to get running saw us lose two wickets to needless run outs. After the first innings for both sides, Craigclowan were only 5 runs ahead and both teams sensed that they had the chance to win.

The second innings was equally tight. Some strong bowling from Tessa and a couple of super catches by Lexie helped to get us to the last over with Craigclowan needing 11 runs to win the match. At this point, Anna from Craigclowan stepped up and played some majestic shots to bring her team home.

The match was played in a lovely spirit with the Cargilfield girls all encouraging each others’ efforts. An exciting finish always trumps an easy win and we left the field proud of our efforts.

U11Girls Cricket v Craigclowan

We enjoyed our drive up to Craigclowan with fine weather and super views. Captain Isla won the toss and we started fielding. Isla was good at encouraging the girls to maintain good fielding positions and to stay alert. Whilst Thalia’s bowls threatened the wickets most, it was Valentina who took our two wickets, stumping two girls out. Scarlett’s bowling was also very fine. Craigclowan scored many twos but did not manage to hit 4’s. We nearly caught them on more than one occasion.

When Cargilfield went into bat we picked up the runs quickly. Valentina, Isla and Millie scored 4’s. Indeed, Millie scored two 4’s. She and Beatrice managed to score 18 in their over, despite Beatrice being caught out unfortunately. Valentina was also caught out. However, with good communication and plucky but sensible running, we managed to score a total of 77 for two wickets compared with Craigclown’s 57 for 1 wicket. We enjoyed a picnic tea in the sun whilst waiting for the boys to finish.

Final score Cargilfield 277 for 2, Craigclowan 257 for 1.

U12 Boys Cricket vs Craigclowan (H)

lost by 44 runs

On a lovely sunny day, the Cargilfield Under-12 boys team hosted Craigclowan for game of paired, soft-ball cricket and this provided an opportunity for our boys who have not played many matches to enjoy a game of cricket in the sunshine!

The visitors opted to bowl first so Cargilfield set about trying to make as many runs as they could in their 20 overs. They made a steady start but lost a flurry of wickets between the seventh and ninth overs, costing 25 runs. The boys managed to settle things down and got the scoreboard ticking over again before losing three more wickets in quick succession near the end of their innings. Well done in particular to Paddy, Fred, James and Joseph whose clear calling and astute running resulted in the steady accumulation of singles. At the end of the twentieth over the boys had made a defendable total of 101 runs.

After tea, Craigclowan began their run chase. Their scoring rate was initially very similar to what Cargilfield’s had been but they managed to retain their wickets for three complete partnerships, allowing their score to develop relatively quickly. Their run rate was then further accelerated by a great cameo by their fourth pair who made 49 runs for their four overs.

A couple of wickets in the last two overs reduced their score slightly but by the end of the match they had managed a comfortable victory by 44 runs.

Well done to all the boys for their good sportsmanship and efforts on the day and particular congratulations to the Craigclowan team.

On Friday we enjoyed our annual Cargilfield Book Festival Day, the first time it has been able to take place 'live' for three years! Children and staff dressed up in costumes and there was a character parade to begin the day involving children from the Nursery right through to Form 8; this was followed by the announcing of the winners of our 500 word story writing competition which this year was judged by Peter Hunter, long time English teacher at Harrow and now a Governor at Fettes College. Thereafter, there were a series of literary workshops throughout the day hosted by authors, poets, story tellers, artists for all the children to attend, we had Form 8 reading to P1 and P2 and Form 7 writing stories with P3, before the day was brought to an end with staff choosing their favourite children's books to 'Read in Strange Places'! What a fabulous fun filled day of books!

introTextAn excellent team performance!
leftColBody

On what was possibly the warmest day of the summer so far, we headed over to play our old friends Belhaven in Dunbar.  Due to COVID, it has been a long time since I been over there and with the sun blazing down, there are few finer places to be on the East Lothian coast!  With rain having meant we did not play our scheduled matches against Dollar and Fettes, it was a welcome chance to play in the sunshine, having suffered all the seasons over at Merchiston on Sunday.  We played some good cricket there against strong opposition and picking up two wins against Watsonians CC and Merchiston set us up nicely for what is always a keenly contested fixture against Belhaven!

We lost the toss and were put in to bat and I made a few changes to the order to allow one or two others the opportunity to bat.......and we were pretty quickly 12-3 which included two run outs.  Not the ideal start!  To be fair, their very tall opening bowler bowled fast and straight and that did for Chay, but Thomas and Ewan were both needlessly run out so it was time to rebuild.  Cody and James put on 48 in just over 4 overs which really got the innings going before Cody was carelessly run out for 17.  This brought in Charles and he played his best knock of the season with a terrific 47no, narrowly missing out on his 50 but playing some wonderful cricket shots all round the ground, but one sublime cover drive off their very tall quick bowler was the stand out shot as it raced to the boundary with not a fielder moving.  The skipper played nicely for 37 before being bowled between bat and pad, Leo struck the ball well for 11 and Charle came in at the end to help Charles get us over 150 which had been our target at the start.  We ended on 153-7 in our 20 overs which was an excellent score after a poor start too the innings and showed just what can be achieved if batsmen take their time, are patient, play each ball on its merit and make sure they put the bad ball away.  It would take some getting given the strength of our bowling attack, and so it proved.

Belhaven quickly subsided to 17-7 in the face of an excellent opening spell by Xander and Alexander who both picked up three wickets each.  Both bowled straight (always important), but Xander swinging deliveries made even their best batters struggle and the game was done after their 8 overs.  Some big hitting late on gave some respectability to the scoreline, but we bowled them out for 67 giving us a convincing win.  I was delighted by some excellent fielding, including a great catch and run out by Milo in the covers but everyone contributed to what was an excellent team performance.

Camp next week, then our final two matches when you return from the Lake District.  Have fun - wish I was going too......!

P1s had great weather for their trip to the Falkirk Wheel, Helix Park and the Kelpies on Thursday. They saw how canals worked; an action-packed demonstration of the locks letting barges through and then watching them being lifted hundreds of metres into the air. There was also some paddling in the Scot Splash area, fun in the playpark and a delicious picnic.

Another mini concert with lots of terrific performances! Even though we are in that very busy stage of term with so much going on, the children continue to practise hard and enjoy their music making. It is wonderful to see!On Saturday, we hope that all of our pipers will perform ‘The Crags of Mount Tumbledown' to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of the end of the Falklands War. introTextA very good game of cricket!
leftColBody

On a day glorious June day our U11A boys took to the field to play Belhaven. Wilfred won the toss and without hesitation decided to bat first on a green pitch with favourable overhead conditions for the bowlers. Monty and Edward opened, but both fell relatively cheaply to an excellent opening spell from the Belhaven openers. Archie and Caspian settled the nerves with some fine stroke play, but when Caspian fell it left the Cargilfield men in trouble for the first time this season at 31-3. Our batting depth was tested and it stepped up, Jamie and Archie formed a dominant partnership which progressed our score nicely. This was alongside valuable contributions from Theo, Dexter, Rafa and Alexander which enabled Cargilfield to post 113 in 20 overs.

Wilfred and Caspian opened the bowling superbly and confined Belhaven to 8-1 off 4 overs. Alexander and Oliver were our first change bowlers and again created problems for the Belhaven batters and both picked up wickets. Cargilfield looked to be cruising to victory, but a big middle order recovery put the pressure on the boys. This is where our Leg-Spin duo of Edward and Oliver worked their magic and bowled the side to victory.

Players of the match went to Jamie for his 25* and Oliver who bowled 4 overs taking 4 wickets for 8 runs.

A super performance from the boys and the fielding guru Sean needs to be commended as the boys were outstanding in the field!

introTextA terrific afternoon of cricket!
leftColBody

Arriving at Edinburgh academy on a glorious sunny day perfect for cricket. The festival was a T10 and we were playing a round robin with first game against Fettes. We batted first and started quickly with 15-1 off the first 2 overs. Felix U lead the way with a retired score of 25. Well done to Scarlett M for also scoring a decent 17. In the 10 overs we put on a respectful score of 76.

Our bowling was very consistent throughout the innings, not taking many wickets but keeping the run rate down. We restricted Fettes to a score of 54-3.

A good win to start the day.

Second game against SMC and had a very similar batting innings scoring 72. Conrad K was top scorer of 19 and hitting three 4s in a row. Orhan B also produced a steady innings but rules of the tournament meant batsman had to retire after 15 balls.

Looking for our second win of the day we knew we had to bowl and field well. We weren’t that lively out I the field and we let a few runs slip by but George C-S had a brilliant 8th over of the game which put us in a great position to win. We had a steady last 2 overs and walked away with our second win of the day.

Our last game was against Edinburgh Academy and as they had won their 2 games this was a final. We won the toss and decided to bat. After a slow start we managed to pick up the run rate but unfortunately, we couldn’t capitalise on using the pace off EAs attack. Both Felix U and Slyvan E retired and were able to get us to a respectable score of 52.

We had an uphill battle if we were going to walk away with the trophy. The players came out to field in good spirts and produce probably our best bowling and fielding performance keeping the run rate down. Unfortunately, our score wasn’t quite high enough and EA got the winning runs in the 8th over.

Well done to all the players as it was a lovely day and there was some brilliant cricket on show.

perch_introTextA terrific afternoon of cricket!
perch_leftColBody

The U9 boys enjoyed a spirited and fun cricket match at Belhaven this afternoon. Our captain, Arlo, opted to field first and the boys set out to bowl and field as well as they could from the start. Each bowler had 2 overs each and there were some super displays. Everyone showed a great improvement and it was rewarding to see the boys taking wickets and encouraging each other in the field. The Belhaven boys batted well and managed to score 52 runs.

When batting we looked to score runs on every bowl. There was some good running between the wickets and the calling was clear and, on the whole, sensible. We’ve been talking about decision making in training and I was pleased to see the boys trying to quickly survey the options properly before deciding to run or not. Our shots were strong and we scored a lot of boundaries. In the end we scored well over 100 runs.

Both teams enjoyed a delicious sausage roll together after the match and it was lovely to be given such a warm welcome by the Belhaven boys. Well played everyone!

U9 Rounders v Belhaven

The Under 9s were pleased to be playing rounders again on a beautiful afternoon at Belhaven. With liberal amounts of sun cream applied to all, Clara, our captain, won the toss and we went into field. Clara was bowling fast and pretty accurately but Belhaven had some good hitters. We still managed to hold them to three rounders though, with one girl stumped out. In our first innings we were not hitting quite as well as Belhaven, in fact many of the girls missed the ball altogether. However, we were brave and determined in running and managed several half rounders and Zinnia scored a whole rounder, giving a total of 5½.

Belhaven did not fare so well in their second innings as we improved our fielding. Alice and Isla did particularly well running players out and Zinnia took a fabulous catch. Well done, Zinnia! Belhaven did need to communicate better when running as Alice managed to get two runners out at third post and then another unfortunate at second, all off one ball! In total we managed to get nine runners out in the second innings, quite an achievement!

In Cargilfield’s last innings we did manage to hit the ball a bit better, which gave us a much better chance to score. Clara scored a whole rounder and Isla M. scored two. With several more half rounders we achieved 6 ½ for the second innings. Well played, girls!

Final total Cargilfield 12 Belhaven 6

U13A Rounders v Belhaven

18-12 (win)

A fantastic sunny Wednesday afternoon at Cargilfield for some rounders. We started off batting and as usual this was very consistent with some lovely bowls coming in from the Belhaven bowler. These allowed the girls to make some lovely contact with the ball sending it a great distance and making Belhaven perform some quick fielding. We did however also find that it allowed us to hit the ball high in the air making it easy for Belhaven to catch the it. We did really well to push onto 2nd base gaining many ½ points to add to our total. At the end of the first 30 good balls we were up 9 ½ points.

It was Cargilfield’s turn to take to the field. Lotte had some great bowling and didn’t give away any points the whole game. In the field we made some little errors with lack of communication and sometimes lack of paying attention however the team really worked as a unit to pick up their game and held Belhave off scoring points. They finished with 3 1/2 points.

Our second shot at bats were as consistent as our first. This is definitely a strength of our team this season. Another good scoring innings with 8 1/2 points being added to the score finishing on 18 points.

Back into the field we went and this time Belhaven were eager to add to their score. They had a real sense of wanting to win and with that they started to consistently hit, hit, hit! Their scoring kept topping up and we were really challenged in the field. On occasions the ball would go straight over the top of our outfielders or hit the ball hard and roll past us. After 30 good balls Belhaven had added 8 ½ points to their score finishing on 12. Well done to both teams for a great game!

U13B Rounders Cargilfield v Belhaven (h)

This afternoon, the Cargilfield U13B girls hosted Belhaven School for a game of Rounders. The game consisted of 2 innings of 30 good balls each. Both teams played a great game and thoroughly enjoyed the match, especially with the cracking weather we had.

Winning the toss, the Cargilfield girls started off fielding in the first innings. The girls were quick to the ball and managed to run out 6 of the 11 opponents! When it was their turn to bat, the girls continued to demonstrate great play scoring an accumulative total of 7 rounders, a notable 3 rounders scored by Judith Ker. This put them in front of the Belhaven girls by 2 rounders.

The girls finished off the game with a strong second innings. Again when fielding they got six of the 11 Belhaven girls out, with thanks to a great catch from Annika Hofer, and a fantastic run out by Amenah Jumani. Although unable to finish their second innings of batting, the girls were batted phenomenally and scored a whopping 4 rounders off 11 balls!

Ultimately, this led to a cracking win for the Cargilfield girls, with a total of 13 rounders to Belhaven’s 10. Congratulations girls on a great match! Well done to our captain Lily Griffiths for leading the girls to a triumphant victory.

introTextAn excellent team performance!
leftColBody

In an extra fixture, arranged as a pleasant surprise at the last minute, a mixed team of boys and girls, U10 and U11, took on Merchiston in a soft ball pairs match at home.

Merchiston chose to bat first, which meant Cargilfield taking to the field in an attempt to limit the number of runs the visitors could score in their allocation of 20 overs. Our team made a strong start with very accurate bowling from Lottie and Scarlett, followed by tidy overs from the rest of the team. The fielding was excellent, Toby, Theo and James were particularly active in saving runs and Leonardo took a very composed catch on a particularly high ball.

A few runouts towards the end of Merchiston’s innings knocked off a few runs off their total, leaving them with a total of 45 runs.

James M and James S opened the batting, notching up 36 runs in their four overs. The rest of the pairs kept the score ticking over very tidily with Cargilfield reaching a final score of 104 runs. The calling and communication were impressive for much of the innings.

Well done to everyone who participated in the match, particularly for the excellent sportsmanship on display.

perch_introTextAn excellent team performance!
perch_leftColBody

Well done to everyone who participated in the match, particularly for the excellent sportsmanship on display.

introTextA great afternoon of athletics!
leftColBody

On Friday 27th May we hosted our annual Senior Sports Day. After 3 years it was great to have pupils back participating in this fantastic school event. Having held the field event heats in advance we had our top 8 competing in the finals. We started the afternoon with some exciting and fast hurdle and sprint events.During the course of the afternoon the pupils competed well with some really good battles both on the track and in the field. Three new school records were broken by Form 8's Leo OC at U13 level in the Long Jump, 200m & 400m. To highlight two of the school records had been held since 1995 & 1997.

Well done to all our age group winners:

U9 Boys: Hamish McH

U9 Girls: Livia M

U11 Boys: Oliver T

U11 Girls: Izzy A

U13 Boys: Leo OC

U13 Girls: Anna E

Welcome to our latest mini concert! It is lovely to hear so many confident performances having just returned after half term, and the children have clearly been practising hard at home over the break which is super to see. As always, thank you to all of our teachers who have worked so hard with the children and I am always delighted to have a queue of eager musicians keen to play each week. In two weeks’ time, we have our annual Summer Concert in Chapel for Forms 4 to 7 and we look forward to welcoming parents and friends for a live concert once again!

P2 visit the Five Sisters Zoo

We paused for a moment on entering the zoo at the memorial garden built to commemorate the animals that died in a ferocious fire that swept through the zoo’s reptile house. We were heartened to hear that the fire crew was able to rescue a pair of dwarf crocodiles and an otter that was housed nearby. The “Lost Kingdom” has been constructed since, and we were able to experience the tropical climate inside and see the crocodiles that survived the fire next to some American alligators, a crocodile monitor and a rhinoceros iguana with its three horn-like lumps on its head.

On the way to the reptile house, we were delighted to see Peanut and Oscar, two Asian short clawed otters, with their pups playing happily by their pond. We saw the remnants of seafood fed to them earlier on in the day. We noticed a blue crane perched on a nest and were delighted to see it had laid an egg. Nearby were the extremely sociable meerkats in their enclosure built to recreate the African desert. We saw one meerkat acting as a sentry perching on its hind legs and scanning the sky for predators. The rest of the mob were digging burrows with their long, sharp claws and foraging for food. We noticed their large eyes surrounded by dark patches which we learnt reduces the glare from the bright desert sun.

We attended a workshop led by Adam, the zookeeper, who talked about the various habitats that animals live in. We went on to examine the way in which animals have adapted to survive in their surroundings. Fennec foxes have many desert adaptations and we learnt that their big ears help keep them cool. Their pale fur also helps them blend in with the sand. Adam took us to see the red panda perched high in the trees and we learnt how this carnivore has adapted to living in an herbivorous environment and eats mainly bamboo leaves. Adam then guided us to see the snow leopards in their enclosure recreated to mimic their native mountainous habitat. It was difficult to spot them at first because they camouflaged so well into their surroundings. Adam told us how global warming is threatening their survival and how the warmer weather is increasing the growth of plants in their habitats which makes the snow leopards easier to spot by predators. He gave us some advice on what we can do to prevent climate change and ensure the survival of this species.

We listened to the moving story of Peggy, Suzzie and Carmen – three bears who were rescued from a circus. One of the bears, Suzzie, was so traumatized by the appalling conditions she was kept in that, on her arrival at the zoo, she kept walking in small circles. All three bears have since passed away but we were glad to learn that they spent some happy years at the zoo enjoying their purpose-built woodland enclosure with its waterfall and stream. Two new bears have since arrived at the zoo and we caught one enjoying a bath and doing a funny roly-poly just in front of us.

Four male lions were rescued from a travelling circus in Belgium and were brought to the zoo in 2015. We saw pictures of the lions crammed into tiny metal cages and learnt that they had their claws ripped out and were beaten by sticks. The lions are now living happy, safe and healthy lives at the zoo and we were delighted to see them close-up looking relaxed and enjoying a nap in the warm sunshine.

Many other animals delighted and entertained us on our wander around the zoo including monkeys, lemurs, Scottish wild cats, wallabies, and gibbons with their howling call.

And finally, our thanks to Daniyal and Matthew who donated their birthday money to the Five Sisters Zoo to help care for the animals at the zoo and protect those that are endangered. Watch out, David Attenborough. We have some budding conservationists in the making!

On Monday we were delighted to receive a visit from Mr Andrew Kennedy, Director of Music at Uppingham School. Mr Kennedy, a former opera singer of very high repute, led choral workshops with Form 7 and with Form 5. We enjoyed a challenging new warm-up song and working on some of our repertoire with a fresh perspective from a highly experienced singer and conductor. It is always exciting to see how well the children respond to visiting musicians – well done to all those involved.

As a way of celebrating the end of their exams, Form 6 donned their outfits to participate in our annual Asian Culture Afternoon. They got to draw their own henna tattoos and explore the various designs in ceramics. The best bit was most definitely the Bollywood dance workshop led by Gaby from Theiya Arts. They all showed a great sense of rhythm and well and truly embraced the style of dancing. Well done, Form 6!
