Welcome to our second mini concert of the term! It has been lovely to have our Form 8 girls and boys back from France and three of our most talented musicians at the top of the school who are in the final stages of their musical careers here at Cargilfield, have recorded performances for this week's concert; alongside these, we have some lovely recordings from children in the pre prep who are just starting out. Fantastic to see! We hope you enjoy this week's concert and a big thank you to our team of talented music teachers who continue to work so hard to inspire all our musicians throughout the school. If you would like to play in next week's concert, please get in touch with Dr Allsop.

introText8 tries and a great team effort!
leftColBody

We scored 8 converted tries and conceded just one in the last play of the game and fully deserved the win this afternoon against what was, in fact, a plucky and strong running Belhaven side who competed hard at the breakdown but who found our tight and aggressive defensive line very hard to break down this afternoon.  It was a really encouraging and impressive team performance today with every single player doing their job and our shape in both attack and defence was really good and promises much for the rest of the season, so very well played indeed, boys!  Charles, Conrad and Zak led the side really well today and I was so pleased with they way they encouraged everyone and the sense of team spirit was really evident and will be key when we get in to the tough games against Sedbergh later this term.

With Form 8 having been away in France for the past week, the start of the season has been a little disjointed but we had two really good sessions this week to get back in to things, working hard on our defensive alignment at the breakdown on Monday followed by an excellent session from Andy Henderson from Strathallan on Tuesday where we focused on our alignment in attack.  Both of these sessions bore fruit this afternoon as right from the whistle, we hit Belhaven hard when we had the ball, with our speed at the ruck outstanding and we moved the ball quickly out in to the wide channels: Sylvan was excellent at 9 today, making really good decisions whether to snipe down the side of the ruck, or else pass the ball away quickly to Charles who played really flat which made life really difficult for the Belhaven defence.  Conrad controlled the midfield, stepping well off both feet, putting in some thunderous tackles and then releasing James at 13.  He had an excellent debut today, scoring a terrific solo try with his quick feet whilst also putting Rafa away in to space which proved a really tough proposition for Belhaven with his very direct and very aggressive running with ball in hand. Ewan at full back was terrific, tidying up loose ball, proving almost impossible to get hold of with his quick feet and then being really strong at the breakdown securing a number of turnovers.  Kit did well out on the wing too, cutting inside to look for the support of his forwards so he did not get isolated and Jamie deservedly came up from the 2s at half time and had a couple of excellent runs.  A really good effort from the three quarter line who used our possession pretty well overall, with only a bit of white line fever creeping in towards the end of the game.

Up front, we made big inroads with Zak, Thabo, Freddie and Xander leading the way with powerful, bullocking running, off loading really well to keep moving forwards and our ruck speed was outstanding, allowing our three quarters to attack chaotic and unprepared defence which is how we are trying to play; Monty, Harry and Edward all had good games and I was pleased Harry scored an excellent close range try and Monty got his hands on the ball a lot and showed just how more comfortable he is in the team since the start of term.

The scoreline was pretty irrelevant to be honest.  What pleased me most was the way we looked to play, the way we moved the ball quickly and the speed at the ruck: this is the key to future success as the season progresses, and we are back in action on Saturday morning with a game against Heriots at Goldenacre.  Things are beginning to build nicely, and seeing the team gel so well and play in the style we did makes me excited for the weeks ahead.  Well done, chaps!

introTextA wet afternoon!
leftColBody

A brilliant and even battle was fought in the miserable rain this afternoon but spirits remained high and some brilliant hockey was played. Eleora had a fabulous game, she was in lovely space and being very good at communicating that. We had great skills from both Minty and Thandie driving forward with determination. Emilie and Esme were doing some great clearances in the D and often getting the ball to Polly, Isabelle and Isobel in the free space up the pitch.

At the end of the first 3rd, we decided to work on spacing out to the sides of the pitch because that’s where the space was. The team responded very well and clearly tried hard to work on this, and it showed in their performance. By the end of the match the girls were resilient through the driving rain and had a particularly amazing hit out finding a player at the top of the pitch and getting a shot on goal.

Thanks to Belhaven for a fun match and delicious match tea - well done girls!

introTextA nail biting finish!
leftColBody

In heavy rain, the U11A team enjoyed a fiercely contested and highly skilled game of rugby today. There were some exciting passages of play with both teams throwing everything into the match and playing some excellent rugby.

Belhaven started stronger and we seemed a little taken aback by the ferocity of their tackling and counter-rucking, having not come across that in any previous games. We turned the ball over in our first attack of the game, and Belhaven kept possession well to score a well-worked try. We began building our way back into the match and there were some evenly contested passages of play. At half-time, the score was 3-2 in Belhaven’s favour.

During the second half, we tackled with more intent and tried to stop the ball being turned over quite in the rucks. We also added more aggression to our running lines and challenges their defensive set a lot more. This put us on the front foot more, and we were able to score 2 unanswered tries.

Caspian and Wilf were instrumental in the middle of the pitch, controlling distribution and putting in strong, dominant tackles. They also led the way with our attack, putting dynamic and powerful forward runs in. Jamie and Hamish were busy throughout, and it was great to see Arthur back with some trademark, massive hits! Miguel and Leonardo did well to keep up in a physical game. Our wingers, Oliver and Theo controlled the wings expertly, not allowing any tries in down their channels. They also attacked willingly with one glorious break from Theo that almost saw him score from one end to the next.

Altogether, I was really proud of the way the boys stuck with a strong Belhaven side and grew with belief and aggression as the game went on. We showed good fitness and desire. Well played boys.

Won 10-7

In rather damp conditions, our Under-11B boys faced their Belhaven hosts for half an hour of 8-a-side contact rugby on Wednesday. Belhaven scored seconds after the whistle sounded as Cargilfield were a bit slow switching up to match intensity. This was followed up with a second try for the hosts after an unfortunate knock-on ended our first attack. Nerves all settled, the boys began to get stuck in a little more and a wonderful rampaging run by Johnny (the first of many) put the first points on the board. In the first half, the tackling was a little below par, which resulted in numerous tries for both teams. After the break, Cargilfield made a greater effort to close down the space in defence, which resulted in more turnovers as the pressure on the opposition was more intense; excellently led by Oliver, who hassled his opponents almost as soon as they had caught the ball. Jamie’s tackling was marvellous and Arlo and Monty’s pace in attack kept the hosts on their back foot.

The boys strong showing in the second half tipped the game in their favour and they ended with a 10-7 win. Well done to the whole team.

Well done to the whole team.

introTextA good win in the rain!
leftColBody

The U11A squad of Scalett, Rosanna, Emily M, Freya, Helena, Clara and Jemima headed to Belhaven to Halhill Astro today for the third game of the season. The rain started and it didn’t stop from start the finish however the girls got on with the task at hand and although the girls had not played as a team before we started with Scarlett as GK, Helena and Rosanna in defence, Emily the birthday girl and Freya in midfield and Clara and Jemima in attack.

Belhaven started off strong and challenged our defence with Scarlett making a number of fantastic saves keeping the score line level. Our girls in midfield and attack were a force and would not let Belhaven get away without a solid challenge this resulted in Emily running into the shooting circle and scoring our first goal. Belhaven came back at us and equalised however Helena single handily put up a challenge every time the Belhaven attack moved into out shooting circle. The girls also attempted their first defending short corner. They performed this well however Belhaven scored their second goal and the girls now have a better understanding of this set play.

The girls then needed a replacement and we called upon Florence to step up and help out in defence. Jemima and Clara never gave up attacking from every angle and making may long runs in attack.

In wet, heavy sports clothes the girls battled on through the horizontal rain and were awarded our first attacking short corner. This was executed well with Emily passing the ball to Freya at the top of the circle and then taking it in for Jemima to score the next goal, Jemima was delighted and we forgot there was rain falling by this point. The final goal came from Freya that went on the attack with Emily in Midfield and finished off with a goal. Fantastic effort by all the girls in difficult conditions. The final score was 4-3 win.

A stark contrast from the pouring rain, our team of Lotte B, Clara h, Praise A, Lily B, Florence N, Alexandra McC S, Anjelinaa O-C and Alice N were in bright spirits as they took on Belhaven head to head. Taking on the pointers from last week, Lotte and Clara used the wings to a major advantage when smashing shots down the edges. An unfortunate miscommunication meant Belhaven scored fairly on, but not to be downhearted Angelinaa came pouncing back to bash the ball through the whole opposition defence and gain that goal back. A fantastic goal from two Belhaven players meant the team were on the backfoot again, however just as the opposition were settling in did Clara, Lily and Angelinaa perfectly use a three-man-weave right into the goal. Alice showed her defending superpowers when she saved a goal on the line and crashed it out of our D and into safety. Sadly Belhaven did gain back another goal late on in the game to make the final score 3-2. Some special shoutouts have to go to Alexandra for using her voice the whole game to direct her teammates, Praise for some brilliant man-on-man defending, Florence for her determination in winning the ball back and the whole team in general for continuously playing a stellar game of hockey whilst being soggier than a wet dog in a waterpark. A brilliant effort from the team, well done everyone!

7-0 win

It was a cold day for our game agaisnt Belhaven but this just meant the girls needed to run a bit more. After announcing hockey captain , well done Izzy, there was a buzz in the air. Everyone was keen to start off strong and get ahead as early as possible. We did just that with a nice early goal from Savannah W. We continued to press and we pepered their goal especially down the right where Esme would drive down the base line and set up our attacker. With a decent number on the bench we contiued to sub throuout the game and gave everyone a chance to play in different postion. This however did not effect our attcking attitude and we continued to get our shots away but unfortunatley the Belhaven keeper had some outstanding saves and kept the score down.

With it still being early on in the season I was expecting still a bit of rustyness but that was noty the case and I was very impressed with our team effort and fantastic play.

Well done on a great win.Under 13 girls vs Belhaven

As part of our Wednesday lecture programme, Mrs Clark came in to talk to us about her job as a paediatric surgeon. She explained all the training and schooling she had to do and the experiences she had when working in India and Australia. She also showed us how laborious a job it was getting "scrubbed up" into greens, ready to perform surgery. Miranda was our anaesthetist, Rufus was "the runner" and Bea was our surgeon. Alex, George and Theo were the assistants. Most importantly, Ewan did a great job as being the patient (it was the quietest we'd seen him!). Finally, Mrs Clark talked us through some of the different procedures that she sometimes comes across as a paediatric surgeon. It was incredibly fascinating so thank you!

In a very tightly fought contest the Under 9 squad suffered their first defeat of the season against a strong and very mobile Belhaven team. Despite some excellent performances in attack from Daniel, Tommy, Archie & Nick seven tries proved to be not enough to win the game, as Belhaven crossed the line to touch down on ten occasions. Their captain Xander proving to be a fast and elusive runner. Ezra & Ensay both made fine contributions in their first game for the A team as did Miguel but a lack of cohesion from the whole team, in defence, proved to be their downfall. Hopefully with lessons learned we will move on to better things next week.

introTextA super team performance, girls!
leftColBody

We played some super hockey today scoring lots of terrific goals from tap ins to smashes from the top of the circle. The pace at which we moved the ball was excellent and the work rate from the girls was outstanding. Miranda opened the scoring with a terrific shot from the top of the circle which flew up high into the net and was involved in most of the goals and chances when she was on the pitch. Isla C on the right wing must have scored half a dozen through sheer persistence and desire to score. Bea was lively up front, running across the pitch into the wide areas to pick up possession and looked to drop it back to her team mates in space when there was no option to get into the circle. Valentina played in a few positions today and showed some nice 3D skills with some delicate passes and again was someone who was not selfish, wanting to make that pass to a team mate. Nancy grew into the game and after some intricate dribbling skill, played some lovely diagonals up to the strikers, particularly in the final 3rd of the match. Lexi played both on the left and through the centre, demonstrating a great deal of skill; she kept looking for the ball but was quick to pass and bring others into play. Amalia started a little bit half-heartedly but got into good positions in front of goal. Once she scored with a rocket of a sweep, her confidence was up and she really came on. Nadia was as ever present at the back when danger approached and continued to do what she does best - no nonsense clearing of the ball. Of course, that meant that perhaps our two goalkeepers who took it turnabout in goal, didn't see much action but they can both be proud of their clean sheets!

Player of the match today was Miranda for her skill on the ball and how she kept the shape of the team by bossing that midfield - a commanding presence. She also played at the back and was assertive there, driving the ball out of defence, but once releasing the ball, got back into her defensive position quickly.

Well played, girls; a high standard of hockey at times today and a thoroughly impressive victory against a Belhaven side who must be credited for not giving up.

introTextA terrific effort, boys!
leftColBody

On a bright and blustery Autumnal day our 2nd XV looked to notch their first win of the season, after a narrow defeat to Merchiston last time out. The Cargilfield men started well with Rufus and Senuka leading the way with ferocious defence in the opening minutes. This led to a brilliant transition into attack and some instinctive play from Theo led to an opening score for Cargilfield. Belhaven, began to get a foothold in the game and a spell of sustained pressure and excellent multi-phase rugby led to a score for the visitors. The first half was largely played in the middle of the park, with both teams showing a real tenacity in defence. Eventually, the Belhaven line was breached by Matthew after some wonderful work at the breakdown by Wilfred and Oliver. Rufus and the Reis boys continued to threaten with Jamie being a welcome recipient to some wonderful offloading to score a brace of tries.

The second half was a much more even affair and Belhaven scored a wonderfully crafted try, which brought them back into the contest. Cargilfield continued to pressure the Belhaven line and eventually scored the try of the game with Tristan able to cut a fabulous line and brush off a number of tacklers to score an excellent try. The match ended with another try to Matthew after some slick midfield handling from Archie, Dexter and Rufus. A wonderful team effort and a match played in an excellent spirit.

POTM: Matthew and Tristan

Scorers: Jamie x2, Tristan, Dexter, Theo x2, Matthew x2

Score: 44-10

introTextHow these help the learning journey
leftColBody

In the nursery here at Cargilfield, learning journals play a pivotal role in the children’s learning journey. They provide a space in which each of the children’s learning can be documented, tracked, evaluated and reflected upon as they progress through the transformative years between 3 and 5. Below we explore what learning journals are and why we use them to support learning in nursery.

What is a Learning Journal?

A learning journal is essentially a learning tool for each child.

It shows progress through documenting next steps on a range of developmental and curricular learning outcomes which the children explore during their time at nursery and home. These include; emerging literacy and numeracy, health and wellbeing, communication skills, thinking skills, relationships and motor skills.

Over time, patterns and themes emerge about a child’s experiences at nursery; what they are interested in, how they learn and how they have developed and grown. It ultimately becomes their learning footprint.

Learning Journals help to extend learning beyond the individual.

They provide a framework for children, parents and nursery staff to; share observations, interests and progress with the different people in a child’s life.

This ultimately serves to extend and build on learning that has occurred and makes new connections to forge new areas of learning going forward.

Learning.Journals.1

Learning.Journals.3

Learning.Journals.4.jpg

Why do we have Learning Journals?

At Cargilfield, learning journals provide a template of good practice through which children’s individual progress can be documented, tracked and reflected upon i.e ‘What was I doing (the activity) What did I learn (development/progress).

They provide a structure for reflection on the learning that has taken place and allow staff to identify and record individual next steps for each child i.e I can recognise numerals 0-3. Now I am learning to recognise 4 and 5.

Learning journals provide a unique space where learning can be captured in its various forms whether it be the development of speech and language skills or gross motor development.

They also provide a forum for meaningful connections between parents, nursery staff and individual children in their own learning and development.

Finally, a child’s learning journal accumulates over time, so provides a place to reflect on the ‘learning and development’ that has happened over the crucial years between 3 and 5. Helping every child to celebrate their; strengths, learning, passions and interests as they start the next part of their journey in Primary 1.

Thank you to Dr Alderson, Warden of Glenalmond College, for coming down to preach in Chapel this morning. He spoke about the importance of taking time to make the right decision, even when others might be heading down the wrong path. Our actions, especially at difficult times, define us, just as in the story of the Good Samaritan. Thank you for coming down and we hope you enjoyed your visit.

introTextAssessment successful!

Many congratulations to the seven Form 7 children who passed their Bronze Navigator assessment this afternoon. They confidently navigated through the Pentlands using the tools and techniques that they learnt a few weeks ago. All of the children also completed a home paper with a route-planning exercise and questions on access rights/responsibilities, kit and emergency procedures.

Welcome to our first Mini Concert of the new school year! These online concerts started when we were in Lockdown, but we have continued with them as they provide a perfect opportunity for children at whatever musical level, to perform for their friends and families. Of course, having a live audience back in Chapel for our larger concerts and poetry recitals has been so good, but we hope you enjoy these weekly mini concerts as much as the children seem to, judging by all the recordings that come in each week! Well done to all the children who have performed and to our talented team of music teachers who work so hard to inspire and encourage our young musicians.

You can watch the concert here https://youtu.be/P-FhsWaShb4.

introTextWell played, boys!
leftColBody

It was a bright and breezy afternoon at Fettes for the clash of these 2 great city rivals. The U10s looked focused on arrival and were sharp in their warm up with a range of slick passing drills in front of some impressed parents. The teams separated and our Captain for the day, Arran MacDonald, unfortunately lost the coin toss. Cargilfield were defending straight away.

Fettes had one or two ball players who if not contained had the potential to score a lot of points. Thankfully our defence held firm under the early onslaught with special mention going to Erza and Ensay who made some great covering tackles. With the first turn over, Cargilfield struck, Arran showing Fettes a clean pair of heels out wide to score in the corner. Arran struck again quickly after his first try which really settled everyones nerves allowing the rest of the team to grow into the game. Archer and Charlie began to make great line breaks but what was especially pleasing was how our link up play improved. The boys were not only looking for the support but finding our runners with a good range of passing. By the end of the first 10 minutes we were 4-1 up.

Our bench was strong allowing the boys to stay fresh with rotating subs. They all made an impact Teddy and Hector began to come into the ground remaining strong in defence, George causing chaos in the Fettes defence popping up everywhere looking for the ball. Archer, Aaron and Charlie continued with their strong runs scoring tries and keeping the score boarding ticking over in our favour. Ezra had become pivotal in our attack by cleverly following our runners and being that lynch pin in terms of distrubation at the break down with some sniping runs or snappy passes into our secondary runners. By the end of the 2nd 10 mins Cargilfield had stretched their lead to 11-4.

The final third saw Cargilfield get off to a slow start conseeding 2 earlier tries. The boys were disappointed with themselves, regrouping and utlising our strength in depth to finish strongly. The game finished 14-6. All the boys contributed well which made for a great team perfomace. They have put a lot of pressure on the U10A’s

The game was once again played in the right spirit throughout with our subs even helping Fettes out to ensure the match was as competitive as it could be. It was not an easy match to officate so a huge thanks goes to Rebecca who managed it very well. Also a another thank you to Fettes for being great hosts and providing us with lovely match teas.

introTextA good close game!
leftColBody

With the Form 8s being away we had the oppurtunity to play all of our form 7s in this U12 game with Fettes. It was a sunny hot day so we needed to use the subs really well. Struggling to find a goalie Lyla stepped up and had a lovely game. Maddie lead by example and kept the team going. It was a hard fought game with very few oppurtunities. Thankfully we took one of our chances and agasint the run of play we went 1-0 up. Fettes were having most of the possesion and controlling the game well but our defence stood strong.

We could only hold out for so long before Fettes scored a cracker of a goal and we went into half time at 1-1.

Second half was much of the same with Fettes dominating possesion but thankfully our step in keeper, Lyla, came out with some cracking saves and kept the score at 1-1. A good team performance but a lot of work to do to get our team playing together.

The Under 9 A rugby squad made it two wins from two games with a comfortable victory over Fettes by 4 tries to 1. Scores came from Hugo, Magnus, Nick & Archie. There was some strong running from Daniel and some excellent handling skills demonstrated by Tommy. The boys were particularly solid in defence where some fine team work made it very difficult for Fettes to cross our line. Well done everyone.

Well done everyone.

introTextA terrific contest!

What a tremendous game of rugby between two good sides and although we ran out winners in the end, by a couple of tries, I think, it was fabulous to see both sides running the ball with intent, working really hard at the breakdown and keen to get the ball out in to the wide channels.  I was really pleased with the commitment of the forwards today: the last couple of sessions we have focused on getting to the ruck and working hard when you get there, and this afternoon, we probably just edged the breakdown, securing our ball and recycling quickly and effectively.  There are still one or two arriving at a jog and then leaning rather than hitting the ruck at pace and driving the legs, but Theo at scrum half was able to clear the ball away pretty well and as the forwards get fitter and understand this aspect of the game a bit better, we shall continue to improve and really drive the opposition off the ball at pace.  Harry, Tristan and Monty all carried well and made holes in the Fettes defence.  Our backs were led by James at 10 and Rafa at 12, and this was a key axis on which the game was won: James' silky feet allowed him to run in to space and get over the gainline, and Rafa hit some terrific lines off him which allowed him to get behind the Fettes tacklers or else put Jamie in to space and he too had a fine game at 13.  We began to off load reasonably well too, and as confidence and understanding increases, we will get better at this: deciding when to go to ground and when to off load is a key skill, but you need the supporting runners in order to do this, and this will come as the season progresses.  Defensively, our tackling was pretty good although one or two tried to use arms (unsuccessfully!) rather than shoulders and bands of still: it is important everyone does their job on this front and not leave it to others! Well done to James who pulled off some textbook tackles round the legs to prevent tries being scored!

However, a super game and we scored some excellent tries and deserved to come out on top in the end.  Well played, boys - you really are working hard as a group and making real improvements in all aspects of the game which is all you can ask!

Their second match of the season took the Under-11s to Fettes for an 8-a-side contact match. Having completed a few more training sessions, the boys were keen to put into practice what they had learned about rucking and positioning. Fettes took advantage of a couple of missed tackles to touch down first but it wasn’t long before Jamie responded with the first of his tries, after a powerful run through the opposition defence. Cargilfield’s tackling improved as the match went on as the boys began to shoulder more individual responsibility; Johnny set an excellent standard in this department and Geordie put some great hits too. The boys were able to implement their fast-developing rucking skills, producing a good number of turnovers in the process. Fettes managed to score a second try by not before Cargilfield had put the match well out of their reach. Oliver, Torin, David, Monty gained good ground for the team by running direct before offloading, whilst Timothy and Arlo were hard for the opposition to deal with, particularly around the ruck. Jack and Max positioned themselves well in attack, which allowed them to capitalise when they received the ball.

Well done to all the boys for a determined effort and team spirit - great sportsmanship was on display throughout.

introTextA terrific team performance!
leftColBody

We had a great game with Fettes today. Our passing improved as the game went on with the girls beginning to take up good positions and finding space. The top players on the day were Emily M who scored a hat-trick, Alice who bossed the midfield and Rosanna who played very solidly in defence in the first two thirds but played up front in the final 3rd and capped off a good performance with a goal.

Helena at the back cleared the ball very sensibly and was a formidable last line of defence in front of Clara in goal; the younger sister of last year’s U13A goalkeeper looks like she could follow in her footsteps and should be commended for volunteering to step into the kit at the last minute. Having not got a touch in the first third, she had more action in the second and a particular highlight was a great save at her near post. Florence and Isla M were busy bees up front and didn’t give the Fettes players any time to settle. Isla M managed to get a goal and Florence’s persistence helped to set up a few. Isla SA came on in the middle third and showed how coachable she is by listening carefully to instructions and responding well. By the final third she was picking up a great position at the back post and this will bode well in future matches. Glory was up front to begin with linked up well with the midfield by dropping back and looking for the ball.

Overall it was a terrific team performance and the girls should be very proud of their 7-1 win. Well done, girls!

We started this mathc playing some powerful rugby, aggressive in the tackle and dominant in the ruck. With these tactics, we managed to gain the upper hand in the match and scored some good tries. Some notable strong running from Caspian and Jamie, gave the team a lot of forward momentum. We aimed to play some well-structured rugby, however, setting up rucks correctly and looking to pass the ball along the line to attack on the other flank. It was great to see Theo score his first try of the season with a super run down the wing. He also pulled off a try-saving tackle. Oliver was always looking for the ball on the park and kept a good alignment; he was furious when it came to his turn to sub! James had his best performance of the season so far, putting the Fettes boys under constant pressure with good line speed and solid tackling. All the boys contributed well to a great team effort. It was encouraging to see the boys beginning to gel as a team. Well played, boys.

introTextA super team performance, girls!

The sun was shining down on Cargilfield today for the second games of the season. The U11A girls’ squad of Athena, Lottie, Olivia, Livia, Emily B, Thalia, Beatrice and Zinnia warmed up practicing attacking and defending short corners. The girls were excited to get started and Fettes won the toss starting with the centre pass.

Both teams started off strong making the first half evenly matched in strength and skill. Cargilfield were passing the ball well and were very strong in defence. The girls set up well defending free hits making it hard for Fettes to get the ball through. In attack the girls had many shots on goal with Fettes goalie saving a number of shots. We had some lovely set plays with Olivia running down the right wing into the shooting circle, passing it to the back post for Emily to finish it off in the back of the net. The girls also experienced their first game with short corners which they executed well in defence.

Athena and Emily had a great game in centre playing strong and making a large number of successful tackles, they dominated in the centre position helping in both attack and defence. Livia’s used her strength and determination to move the ball up towards the goal giving the team many opportunities in the shooting circle. Lottie worked well in attack dribbling the ball up the pitch with power and speed allowing her to have a few shots on goal. Thalia, Beatrice and Zinnia were a force in defence thinking about their positioning and stopping Fettes getting through with strong tackles and sending the ball wide.

Cecilia had a fantastic game in goal making Fettes life very difficult. She saved goal after goal, clearing it wide and away and is awarded player of the match. Final score 4-1.

Cargilfield U9 were split into two teams, with 5 playing at any one time. We played 4 x 8 minute intervals so that we could rotate with three subs.

In Team 1, Fettes got off to a strong start with five goals after two intervals. However, this score spurred Cargilfield on and despite an injury from Eleora, Cargilfield were able to step up their game. With some super defence work and a goal from Georgia, we felt like we were beginning to close the gap. Imaan, Minty and Charlotte made some excellent passes, with Thandie working hard in defence. Serena and Polly worked well but despite their best efforts, Fettes scored a further two goals.

Final score: Fettes 7 Cargilfield 1

In Team 2, it was a strong start from Cargilfield, with three goals scored within the first interval. Maria was fantastic in defence and the team work by our players was clear. In the second interval, Izzi was in defence but had a tough time trying to stop Fettes’ persistent attackers. She kept going and although Fettes scored three goals, she didn’t let it deter her. In the third interval, with Cargilfield currently on four goals, Jed pushed it to five with a sneaky goal that inched past the goal cones; everyone was chuffed. With excellent team work from Esme, Emilie and Agustina, Fettes continued to have all their goal attempts thwarted. Anastasia was feisty in getting stuck in and Isobel found plenty of space to support her team mates.

All in all, both teams can be very proud of their efforts so well done!

Final score: Fettes 4 Cargilfield 6

introTextWhat a great weekend!
leftColBody

On Friday, Form 6 travelled up to Newtonmore, in the Cairgorms, for a weekend of fun and adventure. We got up bright and early on Saturday morning for a cooked breakfast before heading off to take part in our first activity, either gorge walking or watersports. Those gorge walking spent the day abseiling into the water, sliding down waterfalls and jumping off cliffs, whilst those in Group B had a great time kayaking, canoeing and MegaSUPing.

During the evening, after a tasty dinner, we all walked up the hill to play some night-time capture the flag and Spotlight. On Sunday, the groups swapped over to enjoy their second activity before heading home for a good night's sleep.

introTextGreat to see girls enjoying their netball so much
leftColBody

Why netball is a great sport for children (and adults)

IMG 0458

If you are a parent in the Upper School you may well be aware already that we have put a lot of effort into raising both our skill levels and the profile of netball in the school this past year. This has been well received by our children who have upskilled massively and been enthusiastic and committed to the game.

In the autumn term we introduced netball as an option for our junior boys and had about ten regular players. In the spring term we had a very successful netball tour for our U13 and U11 players to Gordonstoun playing matches on the way against the formidable Robert Gordon’s in Aberdeen. We also saw 4 of our U13 girls representing the Saltires and contributing to their victory in our regional tournament.

It has been incredibly exciting and rewarding to work on the netball programme and we have benefited from having Miss Hastie Smith as a coach for our U11 squad and to help with our training across all age groups. Some of our staff have also becoming more involved and have been involved in taking teams and in coaching courses run by Netball Scotland. There are lots of reasons why we feel netball has a lot to offer our children.Regardless of age, gender and ability, anyone can play netball, have a great time and learn skills to take into their everyday life.

As netball is a team sport, children learn valuable social and communication skills as they work with others as part of a team to achieve a common goal. Each player is assigned a position which is constrained to different parts of the court and plays a different role within the game, this means that no game can be played or be won without the help of all members of the team. Team members must communicate with one another and work together to defend, attack and score goals.

In netball, when a player has the ball they must stand still, they can’t run or dribble with the ball. This means that players must use a variety of throwing techniques and passes to get the ball to a player on their team. Some passes are high and slow, others are short and sharp; practising these passes at training and using these passes in games helps to develop hand-eye coordination and quicker reaction time.

Netball is a fast-moving game that requires players to run around the court, sprinting and changing direction quickly, over time this greatly improves children’s’ cardiovascular fitness and strength. Training also involves a variety of fitness and skills drills which help to develop fitness so that all team members are ready for our fixtures on Wednesday afternoons.

There are seven different positions within the game that each require different skills and abilities. This gives the children variety, plus continually challenging them to learn and build on different skills. It also keeps the game fresh and exciting for them. Our junior teams have been playing High Fives which is an adapted game for younger players. This requires the children to rotate to different positions and to develop different skills.

Netball in Scotland and the UK has a range of different pathways which gives children the opportunity to continually progress their skills at different levels within the sport, if they wish to do so. It is one of the fastest developing sports in the UK for both men and women and nearly all our children will have the opportunity to play at their senior schools.

A now for the shameless plug… if you think you might fancy a game (either as a total beginner, someone who played ages ago at their own school or an experienced player) we host an adult club, the Inverleith Swifts, on a Monday night in our sports hall. Please get in touch if you would like to come and join us. You would be very welcome and you might even get to see Mr Taylor running around the court.

P2 visit to Craigmillar Castle

On a crisp sunny Autumnal morning P2 set out on a visit to Craigmillar Castle as part of their topic on Castles. Now a ruin, the castle used to be the home of the Preston Family who occupied the castle in the 1500s. We saw their coat of arms above the main entrance into the castle with its wine ‘press’ and barrel ‘tun’, and had fun linking it to the family name. Standing beside the inner curtain wall we looked up and saw gaps or ‘machicolations’ in the balcony above us through which red hot sand or boiling water would have been poured onto the unsuspecting attackers below! We saw arrow slits through which the archers would have fired their arrows. Inside the keep, we entered the splendid banqueting hall where Lord and Lady Preston would have entertained important guests.

We imagined what it would have been like with its painted wooden ceiling and colourful woven tapestries hanging from the walls. We spied the gallery above where the musicians would have played. We then went into the kitchen serving the hall, and saw the fireplace where all the cooking took place. We imagined ourselves as ‘spit boys’ turning the massive spit to roast the meat over the hot coals. We then entered a splendid room where Mary Queen of Scots would have stayed when she visited the Preston Family who supported her cause. She sought refuge here after the brutal stabbing of David Riccio, her musician and friend, by her husband Lord Darnley. We learnt how nobles gathered at the castle to hatch a plot to kill the Lord known as “The Craigmillar Bond”. Did Mary Queen of Scots know about this plan, we wondered?

We then climbed up the winding staircase to the roof of the keep, and saw a large P shape in the ground which used to be the fish pond in the castle gardens. We imagined fruit trees growing there alongside vegetables and herbs, and thick forests where Lord Preston would have hunted deer and wild boar. From this magnificent viewpoint we could see Edinburgh Castle, St Giles’ Cathedral and Arthur’s Seat. We then ventured onto the battlements and took on the role of defending the castle from the attackers below. We fired our arrows through the crenels and sought protection behind the merlons. We then went down into the depths of the castle and crammed into the dark, damp dungeon. We all agreed we wouldn’t have liked being locked up as a prisoner in there with rats and spiders scuttling around. We learnt about the discovery of a skeleton in the walls, and wondered how it got there. We returned to the courtyard by the yew tree, and were met by a magnificent Jacobite highlander who just happened to be arriving at the castle! He took time to explain the outfit he was wearing, and posed for a photo with the enthralled children.

P3 had a fabulous time in construction club this week. They made sure they were accurate in creating support for their mini structures and they made different fairy tale objects both working independently as well as in teams. Great fun indeed!

P1 headed off to the Botanics on Thursday and had great fun finding a variety of leaf shapes and sizes then trying to work out what they were on an identification chart. They were counting sections of leaves and looking for longer and shorter sticks. We had beautiful weather all morning and they really enjoyed their nature walk.

introTextWell played, boys!
leftColBody

There was much anticipation around the 10B’s opening match of the rugby season. There was hardly a cloud in the sky and the walled garden at Merchiston was a fitting ground for the season’s opener. David captained the team on the day, taking the lead with a good warm-up prior to the minute silence in remembrance of HM The Queen.

The opening minutes were fast and furious with both sides making errors. With the raucous crowd, including “Chilly” the dog, encouraging the boys on, they soon found their rhythm with David asserting some control with his powerful running. There were great line breaks from Miguel, Max, David and Salman resulting in 2 early tries. The team had worked hard on their defence in the build up and we held firm until some dancing feet from Merchiston opened us up as the “Merchi” come back was on. Supported strongly by our bench; Finlay, Freddie and William we wrestled the momentum back. Focusing on our strong defence, we soaked up their pressure. Thereafter with good link up play we hit them on the counter stretching our lead to 4-2 by half time.

We maintained our defensive pressure, with Ethan and David especially strong, harassing Merchiston into mistakes and turnovers. On one such occasion the team moved the ball quickly across the line to Miguel who drew the last man perfectly before floating an exquisite pass to Stuart who dived in at the corner. Again, our rolling subs maintained the high standard with Seb, Freddie and Finlay all playing an important role. Despite our quality rugby we knew Merchiston would not give up and they scored two excellent tries themselves though more individualistic than the Cargilfield juggernaut. These tries, which were against the run of play did not dampen our spirit as the boys finished strongly extending their lead to 9-4 by the final whistle.

The match was played in a great spirit with hand shaking and 3 cheers at the end before a lovely joint team photo. Hugh thanks to Merchiston for being such wonderful hosts. Well done 10B’s!!

introTextWel played, girls!
leftColBody

Well done to the Under 12 girls on their first match of the new season. In brilliant sunshine, we hosted a strong Kilgraston team over 3 x 10 minute sessions – perfect for some refection on our performance at the start of the season.

Cargilfield dominated the first session, playing some elegant hockey and stretching the play down left and right to create space although Kilgraston did well to get players behind the ball and we struggled to find the same space in the D and create chances. Nonetheless, a swift rebound move saw us open up their defence and Isla finished confidently. It was a super team goal that was an appropriate way to open our account for the season.

Kilgraston responded well in the second session. They had some strong and athletic players who stretched our defence and brought the score back to 1-1. Indeed, they might have pulled ahead but for one or two super saves by Scarlett making her Under 12 debut.

The third period did not start well and we were exposed such that Kilgraston pulled ahead 3-1. Credit must go to Valentina and Emilia who linked well to feed Isla who completed her hat-trick with two more goals and edged us back into the game. At this point we started to dominate, responding quickly to the umpire’s whistle and taking advantage of the space that was opening up. The end of the game came, however, and a 3-3 draw seemed a very fair way to start the season.

The girls particularly enjoyed the oranges provided by the Kilgraston Parents Association during the intervals: a lovely gesture from our visitors and a formal match tea - our first in seven terms! – was a treat for everyone.

Well done to all the girls whose teamwork was excellent and who worked hard to maintain their positional structure and to string passes together with increasing accuracy. They were a pleasure to be with.

On a beautiful sunny afternoon the Under 9 rugby squad enjoyed their first outing to Loretto and won the game by five tries to three. Tries were scored by Archie, Hugo and Nick and there was some excellent attacking play from Daniel. The team worked well in both defence and attack and demonstrated some excellent passing skills. They need to work on further developing defensive strategies and building better levels of communication. Well done on an excellent first win and a very positive start to the season.

introTextA brave, battling display, boys!
leftColBody

On a glorious late summer day our 2nd XV began their season against Merchiston. A familiar foe due to a training day last Wednesday in order to get ready for the season. The Cargilfield boys knew the assignment they would be coming up against, with Merchiston presenting excellent contact skills and an ability to play from anywhere on the pitch. Frustratingly, we once again started slowly and conceded a try within the first minute of play having failed to deal with a kick off. From then on the boys started to gel and began to threaten Merchiston every time they got the ball, with Jamie, Tristan, Fred and Rufus making sizeable dents into the Merchiston defensive line. Where Merchiston got the upper hand was their pacey outside backs and the first half followed a familiar thread: Cargifield would keep the ball for phases and once turned over Merchiston would strike. The ever-alert Theo who posed a constant threat from scrum half was able to score in the last play of the first half making it 21-7 at the break.

The second half started like the first, this time it was a simply outstanding Merchiston score from deep. Thereafter the Cargilfield men dug in and made it a real scrap. Rufus and Jamie continued to threaten in midfield and the addition of Kit from the 1st XV certainly helped our leadership, game awareness and creativity. This led to a fabulous score from Oliver after excellent phase play from all the boys. More Merchiston scores followed, but it was pleasing to see the twins Theo and Dexter link up defensively to create the turnover that allowed our skipper for the season Rufus to barrel over last play.

A super first effort, with many boys stepping up from the U11’s squad last year. We will dust ourselves off and go again next week against Fettes.

Last weekend, some of the children in Form 7 headed out into the Pentlands to take part in a training course for their Bronze NNAS Navigator award. On the first day, we met in Swanston car park and spent the day learning the key skills to navigate in the hills using 'handrails'. This included being able to estimate distance travelled using both timing and pacing, orientating the map, and recognising common OS map symbols. The next day, we focused on contours, and then continued to practice our navigation and strategy choice. Good luck to all of the pupils for their assessment next week.

A lovely sunny day day for the U9 Bears first match of the season. The girls had a lot of fun playing against Loretto. They played 8 a-side, swapping positions at half time. Cargilfield opened the score with Jed sending the ball straight in. They had a strong attack with many opportunities but the girls are still lacking in accuracy and missed chances to score. They played well as a team passing the balls to each other and being determined to score to the end.

Going forward they will need to improve their placement on the pitch. As it often happens at this level, the girls tend to swarm around the ball leaving big chunks of the pitch unattended.

Well done for the team spirit, girls and keep going!

The sun was shining down on a lovely but hot day of hockey at Loretto with a team consisting of Cecilia, Florence, Rosanna, Lucia, Helena, Isla, Clara, Jemima and Glory. Florence made some lovely runs through the opposing team with Isla hot on her tail, gaining possession back whenever the ball was lost.

After a tricky first half where the team were down 5-0, a reflection was made and the team looked ahead with optimism, only letting 3 goals in during the second half. Special mentions go to Cece for some great clearances in goal, Lucia for some fantastic determination in non-stop defending and Rosanna for some high-class interceptions, really giving Loretto a run for their money.

Looking ahead to improve, the team will be focusing on using the pitch to it’s full potential and spreading out across the field. But for a first game of the season, it was smiles all round for a fabulous afternoon of sport.

introTextA tough start to the season!
leftColBody

The 3rd team had a tough day at the office on Wednesday afternoon vs Merchiston. Merchiston came out the blocks quickly and soon settled into their groove with direct running and good stepping picking the gaps in a semi-structured defensive line as they went over to score 4 tries within the first 12 minute third. With a quick talk at the interval of things we could do better, the defensive line and communication was highlighted which was then put to use in the second third. With this in their mind, Merchiston then started to struggle and found themselves in retreat with good pressure being applied mainly from James, Mack and Daniel, but Merchiston were still able to break our line and cross for another 3 tries. After large amounts of pressure, Cargilfield managed to retain the ball for longer and showed some of their skills and what they could do but the Merchiston defence stood strong and unfortunately, we couldn’t make that last effort to break the line but a stronger effort was shown by the boys. With another brief interval, more points were highlighted by the boys of what they could do better, they set about the final third. With a real strong effort and positive attitude, they showed what they could do and put together a string of positive phases which pulled the Merchiston defence in and created a gap with Daniel utilising the space running straight through it and scoring a well deserved try after running three quarters of the pitch with defenders hot on his heels. Tiredness began to show and the structure of the defensive line stated to weaken which allowed the Merchiston defence to run in another 2 tries before the final whistle was blown. A very positive and brave attitude was shown throughout the game from the Cargilfield boys and they did themselves proud for working to the final whistle and not giving up. Well done boys!!!

introTextWell played, girls!
leftColBody

First games of the season kicked off with the U11A team heading North to Kilgraston. The weather was fantastic and we had a strong squad of Athena (Capt), Olivia M, Emily B, Emily M, Lottie CB, Thalia, Livia, Beatrice DH, Zinnia and Alice B. The game started off strong with Cargilfield dominating Kilgrastons end of the pitch. We scored our first goal quickly and the team started to get used to one another and gelling as a team. The first half finished 4-0 with Lottie scoring 2, Olivia 1 and Emily B 1.

The second half of the match, positions were changed and the team was tested. Kilgraston started to work harder and they really worked on their tackling and challenged us. The girls also picked up their game making it hard for Kilgraston to get into our defending third. After the half time talk we discussed our set up around the opposition when they have a free hit. The girls executed this well and stopped all balls getting through. The game finished 6-0 with both Lottie and Olivia scoring a second goal.

Areas of development, moving off the ball into a space, communication and dribbling into a space. We look forward to working on this during training sessions and next week’s game. Well done!

Well done!

introTextA lovely afternoon for rugby!

In their first full-contact match of the season, the boys were hosted by Loretto over in Musselburgh.

With six players on each team, there was adequate space to run into and Loretto wasted no time in exploiting the space out wide to score the first try of the match just seconds after kick-off. Cargilfield managed to score their first try a few minutes later and after that the teams pretty much just alternated their scoring for the remainder of the match. Many of the tries were due to strong and direct running, which managed to breach weak tackles and the resulting momentum led to tries. Jamie, Arlo and Geordie were particular exponents of this approach. Jack put in some fantastic tackles, with one particularly outstanding try-saving tackle. In the last minute with his team down by one try, Torin showed excellent determination to force the ball down over the line to earn a 10-10 draw.

Well done to all the boys for their fine effort and energy on the pitch and. A big thank you to Loretto for hosting us so well.

introTextA great start to the season!
leftColBody

It was a glorious day to start the season off.

Still trying to find our correct formation/positions the girls were a little lost to start. With time on the ball and some good passing we managed to compose ourselves and start working as a team. Working on our three focal points for today keep ball, talking and a clean sheet we managed to control the game. Izzy A was outstanding in the middle with some exceptional passing to our forwards and if it wasn’t for their keeper we could have been well ahead at the break.

After the break the girls came out with a bit more ruthlessness and managed to put a few quick goals in so I was able to see people playing in all different positions. The girls adapted really well and no matter where they played they continued to focus on our three objectives for the game.

I was very impressed with the standard of our team and I hope we can continue to gel together and have a few more clean sheets this season. Well done on a great team effort/win.

introTextA great start to the season, boys!

With hot sunshine, we played our first match away at Merchiston. We played some good rugby, particularly in the first half, with some passages of play seeing a number of well-constructed rucks and continual phases of play. We looked to pass the ball away from the base of the ruck and managed to spread the defence quite well. Our strength in the ruck was good to see. I was also impressed with our accurate passing and our discipline to pass out wide, rather than simply smash through the middle. We resorted to this a little in the second half, which was a shame as we were playing some well-structured and good standard of rugby. In defence, we tackled well on the whole, despite a couple of simple 1v1 missed tackles leading to two easy tries. Our overall shape and organisation was generally good, although stepping up as a team and putting the pressure on will be something to work on. Throughout the game, it was great to see smiles and enjoyment of the sport. Our leaders talked and encouraged all game, which was super to see. A very encouraging and promising start to the season boys, well played

introTextA tough start to the season but lots of positives
leftColBody

Before kick off, we stood alongside Merchiston on a gloriously sunny afternoon for a minute's silence to remember HM The Queen during this time of National Mourning.

The scoreline does not reflect the quality of our play in what was always going to be a difficult opening game of the season.  To be honest, we probably had 60% of possession throughout the game with the forwards working really hard at the breakdown, an area we dominated for much of the game, and managed to get a number of turnovers throughout the match which was really good to see.  Xander, Zak and Thabo all led from the front and we made good ground, getting quick ruck ball again and again.  Although the back line were up against a couple of big powerful runners, we worked so hard in defence, trying to get our line speed fast and get out tackles in early, and we did this for 20 minutes in the second half when we stopped Merchiston from scoring which was a fabulous effort.  With the ball, Charles had a great game at 10, playing very flat, taking good options and putting Conrad away in to space; Rafa ran some excellent lines too, learning a lot and he had a good debut for the team, defending well too.  Ewan had an excellent game at full back too, winning turnovers and showing quick feet when faced with a wall of blue, and he never lost the ball in contact which was excellent.  We conceded four tries in the first half, but had opportunities ourselves and just weren't;t clinical enough, perhaps cutting back inside a couple of times when we should have moved the ball out in to the wide channels more, but we played some excellent rugby and even though we played up the hill in the second half, we were never overwhelmed and showed plenty of heart, skill and on another day would have gone over for a couple of tries.

I was delighted with the effort the boys put in, the real sense of teamwork that was evident throughout and not once did heads drop which bodes well for the rest of what is a long season of rugby.  I was really pleased with the positive attitude at the end of the game, as you could see how close we came to really challenging them, but without a big runner out wide to cash in on all the ball we had, it was difficult when they had a couple of big boys who took some stopping as the game wore on, but not once did we take a backward step.  Mr Appleson, Head of Sport at Fettes, refereed the game superbly and he was very impressed with the rugby we played, commenting on the way we looked after the ball, used it well and just lacked that big runner to make the most of the possession we had.  I am looking forward to us building on this as a team, and we have the makings of a really good side who will be too strong for most of our opposition who lie ahead, so well done, boys.  A lot to look forward to and you really did stick to the task today which made me very proud and there is a lot of good rugby to be played by this team over the coming weeks.

U13B Hockey v Loretto

This was a great game of hockey in the sweltering heat. Loretto as hosts began well with lots of strong attacking play and moving of the ball but we defended stoically with Beth, in her first game as goalkeeper, putting in some fantastic saves. We were unlucky when Bea hit the post against the run of play and the ball ran along the line but there was no one there to put it in. Some of the players from both teams had never played penalty corners before so there was a bit of learning on the spot. However, we defended very well and held our positions with Tessa in particular, playing her part well by closing down the first shots. It looked as though we might go into the break 0-0 but even after the heroics of our defence, marshalled by Nadia, we conceded after a bit of a scramble in front of goal.

In the second half, Loretto began strongly again and a lapse in concentration at the back where attacking players were left unmarked, they doubled their lead early on. We didn’t give up and Tessa scored from our first attacking penalty corner with a fierce strike to the keeper’s right. Loretto came again but Hattie and Jacqueline in defence dug in and we managed to get the ball up the pitch quickly by playing it to Julia on the right. She put in an accurate cross which Amalia controlled well and after her initial shot was saved, Rowan got the rebound to tie the game.

For the next 6 or 7 minutes either side could have won it but Loretto, who were arguably the better team on the day given the amount of possession and shots on target they had, managed to get the winner as they flooded their forwards towards our goal and we were outnumbered. There was a chance to equalise in the dying moments but the ball rebounded and hit one of our feet.

We learned a lot from this game: how to attack and defend short corners; how hitting the ball off the back deliberately results in a penalty corner (although we didn’t learn from that straight away!); and how moving the ball means you’ll tire out the opposition and play nicer hockey. Well done to the winners, Loretto and thank you for the hospitality.

Player of the match went to Beth, who made a number of fine saves and kept the game close!

On Thursday, Form 8 participated in the Faraday Challenge, a STEM competition organised by The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). After being given their project brief, the pupils spent some time planning and building their prototype. In the afternoon, the pupils presented their protype to each other. Congratulations to all of the pupils for their excellent teamwork, creativity and focus today, but in particular to Freddie, Joseph, Nadia, Lexie, Lyla and Xander whose team won overall. Many thanks to the IET and their sponsors UKRI's Future Flight Challenge.

What a fabulous first weekend of term and Form 8 really did throw themselves in to lots of different activities as they begin their final year at Cargilfield. There were lots of leadership challenges as well as opportunity for plenty of free time, and the lovely weather meant there was lots of time spent outside and also a BBQ supper on Saturday evening.  Well done to all the children and staff for making it such a memorable weekend!

It was lovely to welcome everyone back to school on Wednesday morning and the sun shone and everyone quickly settled in to their new classes and new routines.  It is great to welcome over 50 new children to Cargilfield this term and we hope that everyone has a fabulous term!

Cargilfield where everyday is an adventure

Welcome to Cargilfield! We hope this short film gives you a glimpse of what life is like for the girls and boys at our school. We would love to welcome you in person to tour Cargilfield and explain more fully exactly what makes a Cargilfield education so special and so different. Please get in touch with Fiona Craig, our Registrar if you would like to find out more; her email address is [email protected] or you can telephone her on 0131 336 2207.
